There were two things Deanne had learned very early in life.

The first was that being different wasn't something you could hide forever.

The second was that sometimes, the person you least expected could become the person you couldn't imagine living without.

Deanne had never exactly been ordinary.

Her mother had been Esmeralda's beloved goat, Djali—a creature clever enough to outwit guards, brave enough to stand beside a girl who had spent her life fighting for her freedom, and stubborn enough to survive just about anything.

And somehow, somewhere along the way, magic had decided that wasn't strange enough.

Deanne had inherited it.

She could become a goat.

Not metaphorically.

Not as some amusing party trick.

A real goat.

Four legs. Hooves. Fur. Ears that moved whenever someone said something interesting.

And, if she concentrated hard enough, she could shift back into the human girl she had become accustomed to being.

It was a secret she had learned to keep.

Because Auradon had a funny way of deciding what was normal.

Princesses were normal.

Fairies were normal.

Villains' children were normal.

A girl who could turn into a goat?

That was something people might stare at.

So Deanne learned to keep that part of herself hidden.

Most days, she was simply Deanne.

A girl with a quick smile, a stubborn streak, and a tendency to wander where she wasn't supposed to.

She had grown up hearing stories about her mother's adventures, about Esmeralda, about Paris, about courage and freedom and choosing your own path.

She liked to think she had inherited some of that courage.

She just wasn't sure she'd inherited enough.

Especially when it came to him.
