Married In Red #1

Start from the beginning

It was a simple apartment, nothing more and nothing less. Bok Su set her grocery aside while Da Jeong took a seat on the empty couch. The light cream colored walls of the apartment ere complimented by the dark colored furniture that Bok Su owned.

"Your home is nice." Da Jeong complemented, carefully placing her hands in her lap and looking down at the coffee table made of glass in front of her. There were a few magazines kept on it and a remote next to them for the television set up.

"Thank you." Bok Su responded. There was a small smile on her face, but Da Jeong didn't notice. Her feelings, thoughts and everything else was scattered at the moment. She didn't know what to do now that she was here. Of course, apologizing properly was on the list, but she wasn't prepared for the rest.

"So," Bok Su began, walking over and setting two cans of juice on the table, "How is life treating you?"

"Good enough," Da Jeong responded, taking a can from the table, "Prison was tough, but five years is enough time to think your life over."

"A way to see the fault in your actions." Bok Su said, taking a can from the table and opening it, "A way of repentance."

"I atone..." Da Jeong stuttered, she looked down at her can which slightly shook in her grasp, "I atone, Bok Su."

"I see your remember my last words, but I can't seem to remember them myself." Bok Su said as she shot her a glance, "Care to repeat them for me?"

Da Jeong took in a sharp breath, looking over at the magazines. She looked down at her can before responding. "Dear Da Jeong," She began, trying to avoid eye contact with Bok Su, "Do you atone now?"

"That's right!" Bok su exclaimed, relaxing in her seat, "I remember now."

"Well, I atone. There's your answer." Da Jeong repeated, sitting up straight.

"That's all I've ever wanted to hear from you." Bok su responded before taking a sip out of her can.

Da Jeong opened her can and began drinking out of it eagerly. Her throat had started to feel dry again, there was something about how Bok Su behaved over her apology. Maybe she was still salty about it?

"Why don't we watch something, hmm?" Bok Su asked, picking up the TV remote, "We used to all the time during uni."

"I remember that. We used to spend hours watching something or the other." Da Jeong said softly, taking the remote from Bok Su. She smiled at the old memories that played in her head. Nights where the both of them settled onto Da Jeong's bed and watch endless episodes on Bok Su's laptop instead of doing their work.

"Exactly. Just pick something and I'll get some of the Mandu* I made this morning." Bok su said, getting up from the couch and heading back into the kitchen. Da Jeong's face lit up at the mention of the dumplings and turned to look at the shorter woman with excitement. Back in college, Bok Su had gotten the hang of making small dumplings, which had soon climbed onto the top of Da Jeong's favorites. (*Korean dumplings :D)

Da Jeong spent the rest of the night on Bok Su's couch, watching anything on her television and chatting away with the woman. It was just two university friends catching up with each other and nothing else. They were equal, nobody had done anything bad to the other. Until a certain man popped into her mind. Myeong Hoon. He hadn't done anything wrong. In fact, he was completely innocent. Why was he dragged into her problems?

The sirens, the anger and sadness on her own wedding day came back to Da Jeong. She was framed for killing her soon to be husband, Dan Myeong Hoon. Of course, that was the reason she spent five years in jail. Yet, she was here, talking to his killer like nothing happened. She was letting go of her past mistakes, but she was forgetting Myeong Hoon in the process.

"Is something wrong?" Bok Su asked, making Da Jeong stop any self-conflict. She turned to Bok Su and ignored her question, instead asking, "Did Myeong Hoon have to die?"

Silence. Bok Su's face fell and she slowly turned back to the television screen. Only the sounds of a romance series played out, the male lead and the female protagonist talking to each other lovingly.

"Yes, he did." Bok Su replied with not a single bit of remorse present. Da Jeong was struck with fear and doubt. Yes, Bok Su was still her friend. She was still the quiet woman she met back in university, but she had murdered someone on purpose. Who said she wouldn't kill her this very instant?

"What's wrong Da Jeong?" Bok Su asked with concern, noticing her sudden shift in mood. Da Jeong pushed herself away from her, creating empty space between the two. Bok Su looked at her in surprise, clearly not expecting that.

"What's gotten into you so suddenly?" Da Jeong asked, trying to understand what was going on. Bok Su wasn't acting like herself, but did she even know how Bok Su was after all these years?

"I'm just happy to have one of my closest friends back." Bok Su responded, shifting onto the empty space between the two of them. Her eyes trained onto Da Jeong.

"Doesn't seem like it." She mumbled. She didn't think much of it until Bok Su got up and walked over to the window in her living room. There wasn't much to do now. The show on the television still played, the protagonist and male lead leaning in for a kiss.

"Da Jeong, I used to have this little thing for you back in uni." Bok Su spoke, making Da Jeong turn her attention the Bok Su.

"What do you mean?" Da Jeong asked, her heart thumping. She wasn't sure what to expect now.

"I'll get straight to the point," Bok Su said, leaning against the windowsill, "I loved you Da Jeong. I was even infatuated with you, but then you made me lose my pride in being called a doctor."

"Bok Su..." Da Jeong whispered, looking up over at the woman with a pained expression.

"Don't think too hard about it." Bok su said, before downing her can and placing it on the windowsill. She simply watched the empty street with a solemn expression.

"Do you still think of me?" Da Jeong asked, standing up from her spot on the couch, "Because I still think of you."

"I still do." Bok Su responded immediately. Her own voice had betrayed her. Her eyes widened at the realization and she turned around at the sound of Da Jeong getting closer.

"Then..." Da Jeong trailed, walking over to Bok Su. She stood in front of Bok Su, looking down at her flabbergasted expression. Bok Su looked into her eyes, seeing her own reflection in them before wrapping her arms around Da Jeong's neck and pulling her in a for a kiss. Da Jeong held onto Bok Su's arms in surprise before kissing her back. They pulled away at the same time and while Bok Su admired Da Jeong, the other looked away with flushed cheeks.

"Would you like to stay the night?" Bok Su asked, pulling herself closer to Da Jeong. She looked back at Bok Su with a sweet smile before giving her response, "I'd love to."

END.
