This is a rewritten story with a better (Y/n) story than just a self-insert. It's also a written remembrance for the late Shannen Doherty, who played in my favorite show, Charmed.
Third person's P.O.V
It was a normal day in the kingdom of Corona. The only things you could see in the sky were little white clouds. The birds were flying high in the sky, the sky as blue as possible, and no noise was to be heard.
A loud boom was heard from a small village on the edge of the kingdom, smoke coming through a lone house's cracked windows.
"Are you okay?!" a long black-haired 16-year-old girl burst through the bedroom door. She looked around the smoke-filled room in a slight panic.
A sigh of relief was heard from her lips as she heard someone coughing. A younger (h/c) haired female stood up from the middle of the smoke. She went over and opened the windows all the way, freeing the room from the smoke.
"Yeah... I'm fine," the young girl coughed.
"I just added too many blueberries," she added, waving her hands over a cauldron.
"What have I told you about brewing potions in your room?" the older girl scolded, looking around the soot-colored bedroom.
"...That I should go to my lab..." the young girl answered sheepishly, fiddling with her hands in front of her.
"But I figured that with the ingredients already here -" she tried to defend herself.
"I've told you a thousand times, no experiments in your room. No ifs, and, or buts about it. We don't want our house burning down," the 16-year-old cut the girl off, who pushed up her eyewear on her head, revealing her (e/c) eyes.
"Okay, okay. I'll go to my lab," she relented, pushing past the older girl and out of the house.
"Sure, I'll clean up the house!" the older girl exasperated, jokingly.
"Thanks!" the younger one called back in the same tone. She then walked out of the house and started on her way.
Walking through the village, the young girl received some weird glances because of her soot covered appearance. She dismissed them and continued forward.
She was always the weird one. She was always holed up in either her room or her lab, doing one thing or another.
There are rumors that she is doing witchcraft.
... Well, they're not exactly wrong.
"I'd better stock up on ingredients for the lab," she muttered, taking a left turn. Taking a direct route to the forest, she easily disappeared into its brush.
She started collecting a little bit of everything, although a lot of it were bits of flowers.
She started humming a tune - almost like a chant - if only to fill the silence.
About halfway through the tune, she heard a rustle to her right. Her head whipped to the sound, eyes narrowed. Slowly bending down and picking up a pebble, she anxiously waited until whatever it was to show itself.
'I should've grabbed my wand when I left,' she thought, pulling her arm back.
The rustling continued until the bushes started to part. With that, the (h/c) haired girl threw the pebble without warning.
"Ow!" a slender boy with fair skin whined, holding his head.
"Heh... sorry," the girl apologized sheepishly.
While the boy continued to rub his head, soothing the pain that she inflicted upon him, the (e/c) eyed girl observed him. While being slender and having fair skin, he also had short shaggy black hair with brown highlights and one teal streak, freckles across his cheeks, and light blue eyes.
He wore a blue-gray shirt with a teal patch sewn on it, brown pants, a dark maroon apron, black gloves, dark brown shoes, and brown-and-gold goggles that sat atop his head.
'He looks kinda like me,' the girl thought as she looked at her own outfit. A (f/c) shirt, cream colored pants, and a (s/f/c) apron. Unfortunately, the girl keeps forgetting to put her gloves on, so her hands have burns on them.
She usually wears a dark (f/c) cloak, but she takes it off when she experiments.
"To be honest, I think I was expecting that," the boy mused, taking his gloved hand from his head. He then stared right at the girl.
"I don't think I've seen you around before," he added, humming in thought.
"I don't go outside much, no," she replied with a shrug.
"I'm always in my room or my lab," she added. The boy blinked, intrigued by this young girl.
"Lab?" he repeated, feeling giddy inside.
"Yeah, I do a lot of experimenting," the girl stated proudly.
"R-Really? Me too!" the boy jumped.
"Where's your lab?" he then questioned.
"Other side of the village," the girl pointed to the farthest edge of Old Corona.
"Well, now we know why we've never met. Mine's right there," the boy pointed to the area near the forest.
"Convenient," the girl huffed a laugh, envious of how close his lab was.
"Yeah..." the boy rubbed the back of his neck.
After a few hours, the duo looked through the forest together, gathering ingredients together.
"You know? I just realized something," the boy said, catching the girl's attention.
"That we still don't know each other's names?" she asked with a smile, laughing when the boy remembered that they had not exchanged names.
"Well, uh, th-that too," he finally responded, looking away.
"B-But what I meant was, is that we're both collecting pretty much the same things," he added, making his companion look down at their haul.
"Huh. You're right," the (h/c) haired girl agreed.
"I propose that we team up and tackle some experiments together. What do you say?" the boy stopped in front of the girl, holding out one of his gloved hands.
"Hmm..." the girl pulled a thoughtful expression, thinking it over. The boy's hand faltered. What if she said no? What if she pushed his hand away and walked? What if-?
"Actually," the girl said, breaking the boy out of his thoughts.
"I have a better idea," she smiled. The boy raised an eyebrow and dropped his hand, waiting for her to continue. Luckily for him, she did.
"The name's (Y/n)," she held out her hand, smiling at the boy. He lifted his hand back up and grasped (Y/n)'s small and calloused hand.
"I'm Varian," he greeted, grinning.
It's been about four years since that encounter, and Varian and I have been best friends ever since. We always alternate between our two labs with our experiments, though there are times when I would rather be at Varian's. His lab was so much bigger than mine, while my lab was the size of a broom closet.
Okay, that might be an exaggeration, but it's pretty small compared to his.
Besides, I always have to hide my special experimenting tools.
Even when our experiments fail, they always have a way of making a good time out of it. We can always make some fun in our work. As they say, "Work hard, have fun, and make history.". Varian tries so hard to concentrate, but I can always get him to crack.
I literally couldn't ask for a better partner, or friend.
