With a firm nod and a solemn expression, he speaks. "Yeah," He murmured, conceding the inevitable. "I didn't expect any of that to happen."
Jones crouches, wrapping his fingers around the massive book. "Yeah?" Grabbing he murmured.
Jackson nodded his head, his eyes filled with loss and a sense of devastation as he also assisted Jones in carrying the book. "It's been a keystone in my childhood... my friends and family used to have picnics around here and seeing it-"
He was rudely cut off by muffled yelling from behind the door. "Curse you, Felix!"
Jackson and Jones felt goosebumps run across their body as they paused, arching brows and exchanging wary glances.
"Who is Felix?" Jones whispered. They quickly scanned around expecting more paranormal activity before lifting the book and hurriedly pacing off.
The gentle whispers of the wind rushed across their features yet their minds were still reeling from the encounter, the presumably endless chaos and the thousand questions swirling... they couldn't make any sense of it all, like forces out of the confines of human comprehension. But Jones would suffer the loss of his family, growing more bitter and spiteful each moment. The days stretched into months, and then into years, his patience easily snapped from the smallest provocation.
Then, everything began to fade back into reality, seeing Jones still perched atop the counter, gripping the edge of the counter as he was whisked away into deep thought of his past. He shook his head, reorienting himself, blinking rapidly before rubbing his eyes, as during the flashback he neglected the need to blink.
"Who was that... figure who was chasing us?" Jones grumbled as he continued to rub his sore eyes.
Jones mumbled. "I haven't called Jackson in a long time... Maybe I should later this day." Then a thought came across his mind, making him momentarily pause, what if Felix is tied to that strange entity? Looking back, it didn't seem too far of a stretch seeing that Felix only appeared as he took the book under his possession.
With a resigned sigh, Jones continued glancing up to the ceiling, trying to peer up to the heavens above. "What did I do to deserve this... joke of a furball?"
Jones was met with silence and the space around him remained free of divine intervention. Glaring at the ceiling, he lifted himself off the counter before quickly washing his hands to store the rest of the groceries in their proper places.
He worked swiftly placing the bags of apples, bananas, and honeydew in the refrigerator, the snacks in the pantry, and clean supplies in the laundry cabinets, and cautiously grabbed another chocolate from the pantry, keeping a critical eye for any signs of the mischievous cat.
Once satisfied, he ambled his way to the living room with the chocolate safely hidden away in his pockets, concealed from Felix's incessant food tax. He plopped onto the couch, reaching for the TV remote lying peacefully atop the coffee table, practically screaming for attention.
Jones pressed a button and the flat-screen TV flickered to life, showcasing streaming services, movies, and applications all readily available for use. Instead, Jones switched to the news channel eager for the daily and recent information before sticking his tongue out as he carefully unwrapped the chocolate bar.
"C'mon... c'mon... easy does it...." Jones murmured as he ensured the wrapping didn't crackle or snap, knowing that Felix would be on his case without a chance to breathe.
During Jones's careful extraction, the new anchor aired live, and a lady with a light crimson sheath dress with a confident and composed expression. "Good morning, I'm Sarah Cathwood, and welcome to Oakbridge News. Here are today's top stories. And we are going to start with... the rather obvious."
