Jackson's expression remained unreadable and faltered as he softened his breath with grasps of breath as he responded. "I'm sorry, Jones... for getting us in this... in the first place. But can we just focus on survival?"

Jones nodded, grateful for his friend's apology and concern, he opened his mouth but he felt his arms giving way to the weight of the massive ancient book.

Jones shouted as his heart hammered in his chest. "We really should've left this book!"

Their breaths came in ragged gasps, tightening their grip on the massive book as Jackson began. "So why don't we just drop it right here, save us some time to get out of here?"

Jones's chest burned with every breath as he began. "Whatever that's chasing us, clearly wants this book, but if it's willing to escalate to endangering our lives, it can't be up to any good!"

As the rest of the floating books hurled forward, the towering bookselfs began to timber, aiming to collapse onto Jones and Jackson, the shadows looming over them perilously. The aisles snapped more of the support beams, sending flying debris and dust clouding the air, forcing them to narrow their eyes.

Then as Jones looked up his heart pumped faster, seeing the colossal bits of the ceiling starting to plummet down with a tumultuous howling whistle, feeling a rush of air from seemingly all sides.

Jackson barked out. "There is the foyer! We can make it-" But his sentence was quickly interrupted by the deafening crash of the bookselfs and bits of ceiling that rained down like a meteorites, adding more to the furious cacophony.

They loosening their grips on the book as the vibrations reverberated through their body. Jones spat out the dust as he shouted. "Just keep running!" With renewed determination, gritting their teeth, they bum-rushed forward, burning their remaining energy into the home run.

When approaching the double doors that had a moonlight spilling from the open slit, amidst the raging havoc, a guttural snarl appeared and ate the distance rapidly.

"Stop running! Escape is futile, mortal!" The ominous voice roared with frustration. "Get back here!"

Then the rumbling paw steps began to approach at terrifying speeds, until, Jones and Jackson burst through the doors, tumbling over the steps, dropping the heavy book that landed with a thud and sprawled out on the grassy ground.

They glanced back to see a shadowy figure striding at inhumane speeds before the doors slammed shut, leaving the entity inside pounding on the door, gradually gaining more force with each strike.

Chests heaving, Jones and Jackson felt their muscles ache, slowly propped themselves up in a sitting position, their faces dripping with sweat, their clothes were disheveled completely, tarnished with dust, wood bits, and blights of dirt and their hair was tussle and untamed, the sawdust sprinkled in their hair like a mischievous decoration.

Jones covers his face in distress, his voice hoarse from the chase and muffled against his hands. "What is going on right now?!"

Jackson murmured softly. "I don't know, Jones... I don't know."

Hovering around the book, the forest's midnight symphony quickly filled the space, the steady rustling of the bushy oak trees, the soft whistles of the winds sung through the woodland area, with constant soothing chirping from crickets, before-

Jones spoke cautiously, amidst the impromptu show. "Let's get out of here before the building decides to implode on us."

Jackson responded with a reluctant sigh, downcasting his gaze. The thought of leaving his cherished hidden gem for good made him sour, but after the uproar of events that played, the decision weighed heavy on his mind.
