Chapter 1

Kate's POV 🎧

My eyes fluttered open as the cruel sunlight interrupted my sleep. I wasn't a morning person, that's why all of my shifts were at night.

However, I had to cover for Lily today since she was sick. I wasn't complaining, but at the same time, I was.

I hated mornings.

I slowly got up from the mattress that lay on the floor. The sound of it may make it seem uncomfortable, but as time went on, I realized it was my safe haven.

I lived in the donut shop, as ridiculous as it sounds. But I have been for the past five years of my life since I escaped that hell of an orphanage.

Vampires ran the orphanage. They treated vampire kids better than human kids. They tortured us in all kinds of ways.

Lily found me on the side of the street a couple of days after I escaped, cold and hungry. She offered to help me, and I obviously agreed.

She welcomed me to her house and made me take a warm shower as well as provided me with food. Then she said I could work at the small donut shop she owned. As small as it was, it was fairly successful. People loved Lily's donuts.

Both humans and vampires.

She offered to let me sleep and live in her house, but I refused since I knew that would take a toll on her. So she told me I could come over everyday to visit her, and I could sleep in the donut shop until I had enough money to get an apartment.

So I accepted.

Lily is basically my savior. She's an elderly woman in her late fifties. But her beauty and enthusiasm would make you think she's thirty tops.

I stopped stretching when I saw a notification pop up on my phone - that she bought me - asking me if I opened the shop yet.

Oh. The shop.

I quickly got to the small bathroom, washing up and refreshing myself before I put my hair in a high ponytail and put on my apron that had 'Lily's donuts' in the top right corner.

I opened the shop, smiling to myself as I saw no one was here and waiting, instead, they were just coming in.

I put on my professional smile, sending a quick text to Lily telling her not to worry before I greeted the first customer.

This was my first time running the shop alone. And I wasn't going to let her down.

Except for the fact I opened 30 minutes late.

"Hey, Ava. Alex." I smiled widely. Ava was a regular customer here. She always dropped by to have breakfast, according to Lily, before she went to work. But sometimes she came by at night to finish off the day with a snack. "The usual?"

Ava was the most positive person I knew. She always had a big smile on her face, and she was kind to everyone.

Unlike her husband.

Alex was an asshole, to put it simply. Except when it came to Ava. He was the CEO of a huge company and a billionaire. It was better to stay on Ava's good side. Because by doing so, you'd be on Alex's.. decent side?

I don't think he has a good side.

Also given the fact he was a vampire.

The city was swarmed with vampires as much as humans. So there was nothing wrong with vampires and humans pairing except if it were royals.

According the a rule that's apparently centuries old, the King and Queen must be vampires.

Dumb rule, if you ask me.

"Yes, I'd love that. Thank you." She smiled brightly, warming my heart. But the warmth quickly faded when she turned to her husband. "What do you want, Alex?"

Alex didn't usually come here. Ava either came alone or with one of her friends, so I had no idea what to expect.

"I don't want anything." I could see him tightening his hold on her waist, and I had to stop myself physically from rolling my eyes.

Ava sighed. "He'll have a strawberry donut, and a coffee while you're at it." She smiled innocently.

I smirked slightly behind the counter as I took their order. I loved seeing sassy Ava.

"That'll be 10 dollars."

Ava nodded, taking out her wallet. But she was stopped by Alex as he handed me a hundred dollar bill, grabbing Ava's shoulders and leading her to a table before she could protest.

I blinked once. Twice.

Alright. I guess we're starting off the day with a ninety dollar tip.
