"Where is she?" I muttered to myself as I sat down at the long Hufflepuff table in the Great Hall, scanning the crowd for my best friend. Breakfast was about to begin, but there was still no sign of Mia. The hall buzzed with chatter, everyone was excited for the new school year.

"Sorry I'm late."

"Finally! I've been waiting forever. Where were you?" I shuffled over to make room as Mia slid onto the bench.

"Got caught in the hallway by a hot Slytherin," she smirked.

I scoffed. "Tell me something new."

Amelia 'Mia' Williams had a reputation. Relationships weren't her thing. Short flings and one night stands were more her style. There was probably not a single Quidditch captain or vice captain she hadn't slept with. She was striking. Pale skin, short raven hair, vivid green eyes, and a smile that never seemed to leave her face. Slim, curvy, and just a few inches taller than me. Mia was easily the kindest person I knew - at least to me.

"Check out the new Professor," she said, nodding towards the staff table.

"What new Professor?" I craned my neck to look.

"Between Sprout and Flitwick."

My eyes focused and sure enough, someone unfamiliar sat there. He looked younger than the others, lean with broad shoulders. And with the blondest hair I'd ever seen.

"What's up with his hair? It's so... blonde," I murmured, unable to think of a better word to describe it.

"I know. But he's kind of hot."

I rolled my eyes. Before I could reply, Professor McGonagall tapped a goblet with her spoon and stood, walking towards the podium.

"Welcome back to another school year, everyone. And a warm welcome to all our first years," she said, her voice warm as ever. "Seventh-years, your N.E.W.T.s are approaching fast. I expect exceptional focus and conduct. Your future depends on it."

"Ugh, boring," Mia whispered.

"Shut up," I hissed.

McGonagall continued. "As we know, Professor Slughorn has retired. Today, we welcome a new potions master. Please give a warm welcome to Professor Draco Malfoy."

The young man stood with an air of elegance. His smile was polite, genuine, but with an edge - like it came with a warning. There was a chorus of sighs and awws' around the hall, mostly from the sixth and seventh years, mostly Slytherins.

"I sincerely hope you will treat Professor Malfoy with the same respect that Professor Slughorn had received during his teaching career. He sang nothing but praises for you all. That is all for today. You may begin your breakfast." The headmistress finished, taking her seat again.

My eyes were glued to the new Professor, studying him as he sat in his seat again and began chatting to Professor Sprout, doing small gestures with his hands and the slight nod of his head every now and again.

The chatter in the hall returned as plates were being piled up with hot, delicious breakfast food.

"I hope he's as good as Slughorn," I muttered, biting into a croissant. "I learnt so much from him. I hope this Professor Malfoy will be just as good. I need an 'Outstanding' if I want to become a Potions professor."

"Rory, you're brilliant at Potions. You don't need a professor's help to pass. I've seen what you can do. You were in the Slug Club for a reason." Mia crunched into her toast.
