Chapter 36: that learned of the ranking planet

"Haru has the same issue, only centered on Hayato and to a much lesser degree than Takeshi – her dormant Flames are likely weaker than his. She's already started making new bonds with the other girls and yourself, but without meeting you, she would have slowly gotten just as obsessive and isolated as Takeshi. It is my understanding that she only started befriending Kyoko and Haru after crossing paths with your group, didn't she? Leaving her behind after she had latched onto your Flames and Hayato's affection would have only aggravated her condition faster."

The Sky nodded again. It made an awful lot of sense in hindsight. Both Haru and Takeshi had adamantly refused to stay in Namimori, but it soothed his worries to know staying in Caeruleus helped them get better too.

"Chrome couldn't have survived without Mukuro, so I imagine you have no qualms about pulling her away from a neglectful, unloving family. As for Skull, his Famiglia was terrible, and he was never suited for a criminal life anyway. It is the failing of us Arcobaleno that we let one of our own suffer and be abused like he was. I'm deeply sorry for that and should actually thank you for offering him a safe place to be himself freely."

"No, no, it's fine! I didn't do it for you anyway!" Tsuna was quick to dismiss Fon's bow. "You should apologize to Skull, but that's got nothing to do with me! I just couldn't let him stay with the Carcassa when he looked so sad!"

"I suppose that brings me to my final point." Fon continued after letting Tsuna gesticulate for a while. "You yourself were fundamentally unable to leave any of them behind."

The brunet blinked a few times, but the Arcobaleno's words didn't make any more sense. "What?"

Fon raised a long-sleeved hand in front of his mouth; Tsuna got the impression he was hiding a gleeful smile. "Skies fall in two categories: nurturing or possessive. Mind you, they're not mutually exclusive, but there are always clear tendencies towards one or the other. Nurturing Skies like to provide anything their Elements ask for, they're someone to fall back on, supporters from the sidelines, and they let their Elements do what they want in the meanwhile. They prefer to assist and supervise rather than interfere. On the other hand, possessive Skies keep their Elements close, tend to get more personally involved into their lives and happiness and need a measure of knowledge and control on their movements. A certain amount of exclusiveness too. They give instructions and lead from the field, stepping in without prompting if they feel needed. You, my dear Sky, fall quite firmly into the possessive category."

Tsuna spluttered, feeling offended by the insinuation. "I'm not- I'm not possessive!"

This time, Fon didn't bother hiding his amusement. The traitor went so far as to chuckle. "Yes, you are. It's not a bad thing per se; neither category means much about the Sky's personality, really. For instance, despite his predilection for violence, your friend Xanxus is more nurturing: he lets the Varia elite roam and fight like they want with only limited supervision, if any. Yet he's always there to support them and give them a safe place to fall back between missions, sanctioned or not.

"But you need to know all your Elements are close at hand, safe and content. If one of them needs assistance, you step in without waiting for them to call you. I'm sure the mere idea of any of them seeking another Sky for advice or protection makes you uneasy."

… It did. Just thinking about any of his friends going to another Sky for help made him feel queasy. Even if that Sky was Byakuran, whom Tsuna was somehow bonded with. But that didn't mean Fon was right!
