"you're killing yourself"

NIK had become engrossed in creating new hybrids.

They were on the road almost constantly. Sometimes, Stefan and Nik would leave for hours on end and return covered in blood.

Eden didn't like to think about what they were up to.

Elijah continued to hover, but since her discussion with Nik, she tried not to snap at him.

She was failing.

The full moon approached sooner rather than later, and with each passing night, Eden felt it coming.

Aching bones, violent nausea, irritable behavior. And everything was loud.

Eden could hear everything grow louder and louder as the days progressed. Her head throbbed and her hands struggled to hold up mugs of coffee.

Nights were the worst.

Dolohov haunted her quiet moments; sitting in the room with her. He traced every step she took with a permanent marker, smudging her history and replacing it with thick lines she couldn't see past.

Eden clutched Patches in her arms, toying with the bear's line of stitch marks. Eden saw herself in the bear. Old, discarded, patched up with other people's sloppy handiwork and incapable of remembering herself before the wounds.

They were in the car, she sat in the passenger seat now, Niklaus next to her driving. Elijah and Stefan were in the back, but no one had spoken in hours.

Quiet music played, which prompted Eden to nearly fall asleep but kept stopping herself at the last moment.

She didn't need the three of them to see her nightmares.

Sleep had escaped her as the days dragged, another week passed. The bags under her eyes grew and the anger in her chest narrowed.

What once was a venomous snake ready to strike had twisted into a poisoned double-edged dagger. In cutting out the people around her and slicing bonds formed with them, she remained with a bleeding heart and open wounds.

Elijah stopped reaching for when she lashed out.

Eden knew it would happen.
