Elena Vale believed in love.
Not the kind people joked about or dismissed as childish fantasy—but the kind that felt real. The kind that made your heart race for no reason, that filled your chest with warmth even on your worst days. The kind that made you believe that no matter how cruel the world could be, there would always be one person standing beside you.
For Elena, that person was Daniel.
He wasn’t just her first love—he was her only love.
Or at least, that’s what she thought.
The night air was soft and cool as Elena stood outside the grand hall, her fingers nervously smoothing down the fabric of her dress. The soft glow of golden lights spilled from inside, laughter and music echoing into the quiet garden.
Tonight was important.
Daniel had told her to meet him here, away from the crowd. His voice over the phone had sounded different—serious, almost too serious. Elena’s heart had been racing ever since.
She smiled to herself.
Maybe… just maybe… he was going to propose.
The thought made her cheeks warm.
They had been together for years. Through everything—late-night calls, shared dreams, whispered promises about the future. Daniel had always been there, always steady, always hers.
Elena took a deep breath, her fingers tightening slightly around her small clutch.
“Calm down,” she whispered to herself. “You’re overthinking.”
But still, her heart wouldn’t slow.
Footsteps approached from behind.
Elena turned quickly, her face lighting up—only for her smile to falter.
“Daniel…”
He stood a few feet away, his expression unreadable. His usual warmth was gone, replaced by something cold. Distant.
Wrong.
Elena frowned slightly, taking a small step toward him. “You said you wanted to see me?”
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
He just looked at her.
And for the first time since she had known him… Elena felt something she couldn’t explain.
Unease.
“I did,” he finally said, his voice flat.
Elena’s smile faded just a little. “Is everything okay?”
A pause.
Then Daniel sighed, running a hand through his hair as if he was already tired of the conversation.
“No,” he said. “It’s not.”
Her chest tightened.
“What do you mean?”
Daniel looked away from her, his jaw tightening. “Elena… I think we should end this.”
For a second, she didn’t understand.
The words didn’t make sense.
End this?
Her lips parted slightly. “What…?”
“I’m serious,” he continued, his tone firm now. “This relationship—it’s not working anymore.”
Elena let out a small, shaky laugh, like she was trying to wake herself from a bad dream. “Stop joking. This isn’t funny.”
“I’m not joking.”
Three words.
Cold. Sharp. Final.
The world around her seemed to go quiet.
“What are you saying?” she asked softly, her voice barely above a whisper. “Where is this coming from?”
Daniel finally met her eyes.
And what she saw there made her stomach drop.
There was no hesitation.
No guilt.
No love.
“I’ve met someone else.”
The words hit harder than anything else he could have said.
Elena took a step back, as if physically struck. “No…”
“Yes.”
“No, you’re lying,” she said quickly, shaking her head. “You wouldn’t do that. You wouldn’t do that to me.”
But even as she spoke, her voice trembled.
Because deep down… she already knew.
“I didn’t plan for it,” Daniel said, though his tone lacked any real regret. “It just happened.”
Elena stared at him, her vision beginning to blur.
“Who is she?” she asked, her voice breaking.
Before Daniel could answer—
A soft sound of heels clicking against the pavement echoed behind him.
Elena’s breath caught.
Slowly, almost afraid of what she would see, she looked past him.
And then she saw her.
Standing there, elegant and confident, was Vanessa.
Her cousin.
Elena’s heart stopped.
“No…” she whispered, shaking her head as tears filled her eyes. “No, that’s not… that’s not funny.”
But no one laughed.
Vanessa stepped forward, a small, almost smug smile on her lips. She slipped her hand into Daniel’s like it belonged there.
Like it had always belonged there.
“Elena,” Vanessa said softly, her voice smooth. “You deserve the truth.”
The truth.
Elena let out a broken laugh, tears slipping down her cheeks.
“The truth?” she repeated. “The truth is that you went behind my back?”
Vanessa didn’t flinch.
Daniel didn’t let go of her hand.
And that… that hurt the most.
“How long?” Elena asked, her voice trembling. “How long has this been going on?”
Silence.
Then—
“A few months.”
Elena felt something inside her shatter completely.
Months.
While she was still loving him.
Trusting him.
Planning a future with him.
“You lied to me,” she whispered.
Daniel sighed again, clearly impatient now. “Elena, don’t make this harder than it has to be.”
Her head snapped up, disbelief flashing through her tears. “Harder? You think this is hard for you?”
“It’s better this way,” Vanessa added calmly. “Dragging it out would have only hurt you more.”
Elena stared at her.
Then she laughed.
A hollow, broken sound.
“You already hurt me,” she said. “What difference would it have made?”
Neither of them answered.
And in that moment, Elena understood something painful.
They didn’t care.
Not about her.
Not about what they had done.
Not about the years she had spent loving him.
Her hands clenched at her sides, nails digging into her palms.
“I trusted you,” she said quietly, looking at Daniel. “I gave you everything.”
“I know,” he replied, but his voice held no emotion.
That was it.
That was the moment Elena realized the truth.
The boy she loved…
Never really existed.
The tears stopped.
Her expression slowly hardened, the pain in her eyes turning into something colder.
Something stronger.
“Fine,” she said, her voice steady now despite the storm inside her. “If this is what you want… then we’re done.”
Daniel nodded, almost relieved.
Vanessa smiled faintly.
And Elena felt her heart break all over again.
But this time…
She didn’t let them see it.
Without another word, she turned and walked away.
Each step felt heavier than the last, like she was leaving a part of herself behind with every movement.
But she didn’t stop.
She didn’t look back.
Because if she did…
She might not have the strength to keep going.
And as the night swallowed her whole, Elena made a silent promise to herself.
She would never be this weak again.
Never trust so easily.
Never love so blindly.
Because love…
Was nothing but a beautiful lie.
