"BUT IT'S A BOY'S SCHOOL!" Charlotte Haley, the girl next door who I've known my whole life never fails to push my buttons. But then again, I could never hate her. She's a sweetheart that you'd have a crush on, dazzling blue eyes and straight blonde hair. If it was her going to Welton, the boys would be swooning over her.

"Yes, Charlotte. I've heard," I scoffed at the ridiculous comment. Almost everyone in Vermont knows about the school and I'd be an idiot not to. "Father's been jabbering about how excellent and outstanding it is. I'd rather shove rocks in my ears than listen to his magnificent stories about Welton."

The blonde giggled at my groan. "How about we look at the sunny side, hm? There'll be hunky hot guys at Welton, won't they?"

I rolled my eyes, trying my best to contain the grin that was threatening to plaster. Well, she wasn't all wrong. "Father would kill me if he knew!" I whispered, eyes darting everywhere to make sure the man mentioned wasn't around.

"Then don't let him know!" All of this seemed to be a joke to Charlotte but I couldn't blame her. Father was a sophisticated man at work and to the eyes that did not know him, but at home, all of the perfection disappeared. He was an entirely different person. No one would believe such a man like William Vaughan is capable of abuse.

"Ariadne! Get in the car!" Both of our heads shot towards the source of the sound.

"I gotta go."

"Clearly." Her eyes were still at father as he watched from the car.

"I'll see you soon?"

"Yeah."
