Marona Sylvan has never known life beyond the slaughterhouse.
Born to the backwater towns and sprawling prairies of District Ten, she has been brought up with barbed wire wrapped tight around her heart and a head congested by rotten dreams. Death has always been tangible on the decaying land of her family ranch, felt in the brush of cold air that sweeps against her nape, tainting the rustling grass with its sanguine touch. The axe she holds feels like normalcy to her carrion callouses - all the lambs are born warm and bloody in her hands, and they'll die the very same way.
Every child in Panem is familiar with massacre. It's written in their futures, after all.
Reaping day. It signifies the single minute of the year where everyone in the Districts feel their breathing pause, trepidation sweeping the nation. Twenty four of their children will be torn from their clutches and only one will rise from the cadavers, haunted by the televised memories of what their own hands had done. Marona has never known anyone to return from the Games as the same person they had once been, but when push comes to shove, does she really have anything to lose?
The year of the Sixty Eighth Hunger Games, she knows that something is wrong. From the dawn chorus to the noon church bells ringing, Marona feels a stabbing sensation in her gut which is nauseating, one that can only be described as a premonition of her impending doom. She's told to ignore it, to brush off her crescendoing nerves and think happy thoughts - not that she has any to console her.
At least she's expecting it. When Marona hears her name bellow over the crowd, she sets down her grandmother's rosary and steps toward the stage with all her piety left in her wake. There's no place for virtue in the Hunger Games, especially not for someone from the outlier Districts.
The Capitol is close. She'll be paraded like a show pony, utilised as a pawn for their twisted entertainment. They can dress her up to soften her sharp edges and make her look delicate, peel apart her fractured exterior to appeal to potential sponsors. They'll put ribbons in her ebony hair and rhinestones on her suffocating dresses before sending her off to die. Though, it's all up to her to put on a good show. The Capitol is now cresting the horizon.
It's then that Marona decides she'll play their game. She just won't follow their rules.
