Horns blared loudly across the entire camp, as a signal. Not for anything bad, or something that might be the new weekly threat to our lives, but simply that it was 7 o'clock, and it was time to get up.
My eyes opened, squinting at the sunlight coming through the window. I layed there in my bed for a good five minutes, as if I was unable to move, before eventually getting up. It was getting harder to do so by the day, but I managed.
Once I had finally gotten out of bed, I looked up into the empty cabin. By empty, I don't mean there was nothing there. There were so many different things scattered about the floor and walls. From swords, fishing poles, and kayak paddles, to textbooks, posters, and random fidget toys I had bought online. There was just nobody around. Despite the lake outside, the fishing dock next to it, and the seagulls on the water waiting for a meal, the entire cabin just felt void of life.
'This is gonna take some getting used to,' I thought.
After making my way to the closet right across the room, and finding nothing but bright orange camp shirts, I decided to go to my suitcase instead, and picked out my favourite band t-shirt. I paired it with a pair of jeans, a blue zip-up hoodie, and a pair of high top sneakers. I got dressed, decided I didn't care what my hair looked like today, and left the Poseidon cabin for the daily camp meeting.
I stepped out the door to be greeted immediately by Jayda, a really good friend of mine, and my camp protector. With her dark hair, bright orange shirt that I refused to wear (Seriously, they couldn't have picked a blue or something? Not even a darker orange?), and the legs of a goat that you could see the fur of sticking through the holes in her pants, it wasn't hard to miss her.
"Mason!" Jayda yelled, breaking this morning's silence. "Cipher and Rye were looking for you, so I said I'd come wake you up, but I wasn't sure if you would want me to come in, so I decided to wait."
"You're always allowed in, Jayda," I responded. "And I was already awake, you could've hollered for me."
"I know, you wake up at the horns, but I just didn't want to mess anything up again," Jayda swiftly replied.
Making my way to the bonfire pit at the center of camp, bringing Jayda with, I thought through my response carefully. "It wasn't your fault Jayda, it never was, and never will be."
I was right on that. It never was her fault. We were on a quest, and we had just been caught in a circumstance where someone had to do something, and quickly, or it would've killed us both. One tiny (although almost fatal) cut across the chest, that was all that happened to me. But she still couldn't forgive herself for "letting me get hurt," even though there was nothing she could have done.
We made our way over to the bonfire pit, and I truly realized how empty camp was. It was the first day of Summer break, and most campers had either gone home, or went on some personal quests. There were only maybe less than ten campers left, but that just meant I had the whole camp to myself and the few of my friends that had stayed.
Turning around to the sound of my name being called, I was greeted by two of my best friends. First was Cipher, a short, dark haired son of Dionysus, who looked like he was born in a Hot Topic. The other was Rye. Child of Apollo, who ironically looked like the moon. Pale, with dyed black hair, and silver bracelets, necklaces, and rings.
Cipher ran up ahead of Rye, simply to yell: "New kid!" Before grabbing me by the wrist and pulling me towards the camp entrance.
"Morning, Rye," I said, then looking down. "...Good morning to you too, Cipher.
Rye waved at me, but didn't get out a word before we ended up at the camp entrance. Above me stood a large, wooden, archway sign labeled "Camp Half Blood," despite the fact that the other side said "Delphi Strawberry Service." The cover name for the camp, because mortals couldn't find out about us.
I looked around to see every person at camp crowded around something. There was Chiron, our centaur latin teacher, and camp activities director. He was pretty chill most of the time, unlike the camp director, Mr. D, who was standing directly next to him. That "D," standing for Dionysus (Yes, he's a god. No, don't ask him why he's stuck here, he will turn you into a dolphin). Ms. CC, our new designated camp counselor, was also there. I hadn't really learned much about her still, despite my five years at camp. I'm fairly sure she was a theatre teacher before working here though, it just sounds correct.
There were the last few campers there too, and luckily they were people I knew. There was Sydney, daughter of Aphrodite, one of the most objectively gorgeous people you would meet, but with the fiercest stare ever. I'm fairly sure she could kill a small monster just by glaring at it. There was also Jasper, son of Ares. He was lanky, had curls in his hair, and the dorkiest smile you would ever see, despite being the child of the godly equivalent of a war criminal. Freda, another daughter of Aphrodite, should've been there, but I just chalked it up to the possibility that they were off talking to ducks again. I entered the small crowd to see... someone... new?
