It might become real, the voice said, returning from her dream and chanting it quietly. It was the first day of school after the battle. Just like in her dream. Maybe it was a prediction.
The thought had her frozen in fear. The next thing she knew the sun was shining in the sky and she was still in bed, sweating and shaking. "Oh no, SCHOOL!"
Sophie panicked, fumbling out of bed, but fell to the floor, unable to move. The flashbacks hit hard.
She decided to give up on getting ready for school, afraid that the same thing will happen. She didn't want that. So she sat on the carpet, leaning on the side of her bed and cried.
Cried.
Cried.
And cried.
Tears just kept flowing out—for so long she wondered if her eyes manifested as Hydrokinetics. All those who passed, their faces flashed in her head—all their last words, their accusations, everything. She curled her arms around herself, tucked her knees in. She remembered what hurt her the most.
"And I don't want any connections with you, romantic or otherwise. Get out of my life!"
Ice-blue steel eyes that had cut her like glass, made her bleed. Her crushed heart was just little splinters now, it had been broken so much. Unable to be pieced back together by anyone. Except the ones who broke it. But they wouldn't do that.
He wouldn't do that.
And in what was left of her heart, she knew the words were true.
But in her mind she was going around and around, doubting everything she knew.
One tiny, rational part of her mind thought she simply wasn't thinking straight. She'd just woken up from a nightmare again, after all. She's been having them every night since the battle.
But that voice was drowned out by the fear.
This was the worst one. The battle had cut her deepest. Left her with unimaginable scars. To save Keefe, she had taken on Gethen and Trix at once as he was distracted by Gisela. And their taunts—their threats—cut her, affected her so deep and left her with a lifelong mental scar.
"We're like phoenixes, Sophie." Gethen smirked, closing in on her.
"We rise from the ashes. You can't get rid of us," Trix finished. Their eyes flashing maliciously.
Sophie gripped her dagger tighter. "You won't. We'll defeat you."
Gethen laughed. "Only if their little leader is alive. Or—we could kill her boyfriend instead. Then she'll be so devastated it'll be an easy kill, don't you think, Trix?" He turned to Trix, pointing his melder at Keefe's head to their right.
Sophie gritted her teeth, panic swirling through her head. "Don't. You. Dare." With that, she knocked the melder out of his hands with a kick and stabbed him. She let out a small scream as Trix plunged a dagger in her side. She fell to the ground as he kicked her, the dagger knocked out of her hand. She saw Trix about to strike Keefe with a dagger and gathered her might. She managed to grab the knife and throw it. It hit Trix and he went down. Keefe turned swiftly, distracted by the sound, giving Gisela the opportunity to slice his back.
The pain in his eyes was evident, slicing Sophie's heart.
She was brought back to the present and she let her feelings overtake her again.
Keefe's POV:
Keefe saw his friends standing in the hallway and was quick to greet them. It was the first day back at school after the battle, which had been two days earlier.
