I stepped out into the bright sunlight, from the darkness of the movie house. I had one thing on my mind: Cassie Greenman. This movie I had just seen, sparked a light in me. One I couldn't resist. I insisted myself to walk to her house. Maybe she was a girl out of my ball park. Maybe she was rich, too pretty and hard to get.
I tucked in my white shirt into my raggedy jeans. I kicked a rock while I walked. I turned to look at myself In the mirror; I had to make sure I looked alright. I smoothed my dark hair back, and walked all the way to her house. 2 blocks down. The atmosphere changed from the greaser to the soc part of town. When girls passed me, they averted their eyes, like they were embarrassed or felt bad for me. This didn't bother me. I was high on confidence and Coca-Cola.
I hopped up the concrete steps in front of Cassie's castle of a house. I checked in the windows on one side, and saw no movement. I turned to knock, until I checked in the other window on the other side. I saw Cassie with another boy. Not her dad, but a boy I knew, David. I saw her kiss David, and he got up like he was leaving. I quickly turned around and stomped down the steps. There goes my confidence. My heart felt empty and cheated on.
I was angry, and walked away. I heard her door open, and not close for a minute. I sensed she saw me. I was in a bad mood and I gave people dirty looks as I passed by them. I walked until I got to a random restaurant. I angerly opened and slammed the door. I was in a dangerous mood.
I went up to the bar stool and sat on it. I planned to forget all of my problems, forgetting all the rehab I had just done. I pulled a cigarette out of my jean pocket, and lit it. I took a drag of it and put my head in my hands. The attendant came up to me.
"You doin' alright, son? Can I get you anything?" He stood there, and I lifted my head.
"Yeah, maybe a beer and a chocolate milkshake."
He nodded his head before I had time to think about how I was going to pay. I was a greaser. I didn't have any money to my name. I took another drag of my cancer stick as I watched him move about with no sound. I heard the diner's door bell ring, and I turned around. It was David and Cassie. I angerly flipped my head around again and the attendant gave me my order.
I took a drink out of the fragile glass, although it was nasty, it was better than being in this reality. David came to my side.
"You got a problem with me, man?" He paused, "you trying to take my girl? I know you are."
I didn't respond.
"Aww man, we got a coward." He chuckled. "Can't even stand to respond." He put his hands on my shoulders.
"David." Cassie whispered under her breath.
"Get your hands off of me!" I snapped at him as I jumped out of my stool, knocking the glass over.
"Aww, poor greaser can't find himself a girlfriend of his own. Too bad." He stood confidently.
"Don't mess with me, man." The silence after those words left my mouth was excruciating.
"You looking for a fight? Come n' Man! I'll take you!" David flipped the knife out of his pocket, and whipped it at me.
The waiter stopped in silence like Cassie. "David. Leave him alone." She whispered ever so silently.
David slashed the blade at me, and it cut my neck. I tackled him in a loud fray. He dropped the knife and Cassie gasped. I threw punches at him when I was on top, and he overpowered me and punched me with his boney knuckles. I flipped him back over and we somehow managed to knock the door open and we were banging that bell all over. I punched him as hard as I could, while I was trying to find the switchblade and grasp it. I couldn't find it, there was too much movement. We somehow ended up outside, the attendant started yelling at us to quit it, but we were both invested.
I hit the switchblade with my foot, and knocked him off of me for just the enough time to grab it. I turned back around and tried to stab him, but I could only cut him, he was kicking and trying to bite me, but I kept cutting him. I dropped the knife, and cut myself with it. He grabbed it back and started taking swings at me with it. He got me a few times. I could hear Cassie screaming in the background.
"Get off! Quit it! Let go of him!" Words couldn't stop us. The waiter was yelling at us too.
We weren't gonna stop until I saw my friends shadows erupt from the corner. They were slow at first, but once they realized it was me, my buddy, Dallas Winston came over and broke us apart.
He dragged me off to the side as David sprawled out towards me. He stood me up and I felt the blood drip off me.
"What the heck you think you're doing? You trying to get killed?" He let go of me. I fell back and leaned against the the brick wall.
Soon enough I heard a cop car coming speeding down the street. He ripped rubber as he came to a screeching stop. I rubbed my face and looked down again to see that I had blood all over my hands. Cassie helped David sit up. I guess I got him pretty bad. He was bleeding out all over the concrete when the cop go to him.
"What's goin' on here, fellas? You greaser tryin' to beat up this young man?" The cop looked at me.
"Trying? He attacked me!" David was trying to make it seem worse than it actually was. I just hung my head, trying to get out of my stupor. The ringing in my ears was interminable.
Lets just say I was dragged off and sentenced to overnight in jail. Not something I wasn't used to.
When I was let go, I walked until I came to the part of the road where hitchhiking always worked. I stuck out my messed up thumb and a truck stopped.
I hopped in the passenger seat and told him to take me downtown. Me and him got in a conversation about what I had gotten myself into. I just came to the conclusion that I was too good for Cassie Greenman.
I thanked the man and closed the truck door behind me after I hopped out. I walked all the way to where I knew Dally was. It was Ponyboy's house. I writhed in pain as I walked, thinking about how weird the name Ponyboy was.
I unlocked the gate, walked up the steps to the house. I opened the screen door and knocked on the door.
One things for sure. This night would not be boring.
