McQueen's Race to Lose

"Whoa-ho." Doc replied to McQueen's smugness with a few cocky waves of his hands in false yield. "Is that right?" Doc then resumed his normal stoic persona, crossing his arms as he tauntingly leaned forward a little at McQueen. "Then why don't we just have a little race? Me and you."

"What?" You and Sally asked softly, taken way off-guard by that suggestion.

McQueen chuckled, very amused and unthreatened with Doc. "Me and you. Is that a joke?"

"If you win, you go and I fix the road. If I win, you do the road my way."

Lightning straight up laughed at this point, clearly very much humored by the turn this conversation had taken. "I don't mean to be rude here Doc," he started as he slid off the hood of his car, "but you probably go zero to sixty in like, what? Three-point-five years?"

"Then I reckon you ain't got nothin' to worry about." Doc replied calmly.

"You know what, old timer? That's a wonderful idea." McQueen smiled, a challenging look in his eyes. He leaned right up to Doc's face with a proud sneer. "Let's race!"

As Mater began to hook up McQueen's car to tow him to Willy's Butte, everyone else began to head to their cars so that they could drive out and watch the race. You and Doc, however, stayed behind. Doc stayed to make sure Mater got McQueen fully hooked up. You stayed because Doc did.

When Mater finally got everything all set, he began to drive off to the track, but you stopped Doc before he too could get in his car and head out. "Dad!" You hissed quietly, grabbing his sleeve and tugging at it gently. "What in the world were you thinking?"

Doc chuckled lightly. "What, do you not have faith in this old racer?"

"Uh, I kinda don't, no!" You replied in a very matter-of-fact manner.

Doc rolled his eyes humorously before looking you dead in the eyes, a playful smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. "Do you remember your first drive on dirt?"

You groaned, wincing as you recalled that memory you very much wished both he and you could just forget. "Why'd you have to bring it up?" You whined.

"What happened?"

"I slid all over the place, that's what happened!"

"And why was that?" Doc folded his arms, his smirk ever larger as he waited for you to put the pieces together.

You stopped for a second, thinking about it, before the lightbulb suddenly flicked on. Your eyes widened in realization and your lips pursed. "Oh...." Now you knew exactly what Doc was getting at, and you knew exactly what he was doing too.

"You gonna get in or what?" Doc called out. You hadn't even noticed that he had gotten in his car, let alone started the engine.

You stood on the bank with everyone else, although while they were more eager and excited for what was about to come, you were more calm and complacent. However, you couldn't help but feel a little excitement yourself, mostly in the form of butterflies in your stomach. There was absolutely no way this was real, right? You were not about to watch a racer, a real racer, speed off before your very eyes. Although you had a pretty good idea of what was going to happen anyway, and you weren't too keen of the racer being McQueen specifically, you couldn't help but be thrilled at getting even the slightest peek at a real racer in action.

"Gentlemen, this will be a one-lap race." Sheriff declared gruffly from where he stood at the starting line, marked by a rope that was tied down on each end by a tire. "You will drive to Willy's Butte, go around Willy's Butte and come back. There will be no bumpin', no cheatin', no spittin', no bittin', no road rage, no maimin', no oil slickin', no pushin', no shovin', no backstabbin', no road-hoggin' and no lollygaggin'."
