"Henry, there's something I want to ask you," I began, my voice shaky with nerves.

He glanced at me, curiosity in his eyes. "What is it, Sophia?"

I took a deep breath, preparing myself for the conversation that was about to unfold. "I want to intern at your office."

Henry's grip on the steering wheel tightened, and he let out an exasperated sigh. "Sophia, not this again."

I pressed on, determined to make my case. "Henry, it's just for the summer. I promise I won't be a bother, and I'll do my best to learn and contribute."

He shook his head, his expression firm. "Sophia, I've already told you why I don't want you interning at my office. It's a professional environment, and I don't want our personal relationship to interfere with that."

I frowned, frustration bubbling within me. "But, Henry, I'm serious about my career. This internship could be a great opportunity for me to learn and gain experience."

He sighed, his eyes focused on the road ahead. "Sophia, I appreciate your enthusiasm, but I just don't think it's a good idea."

I couldn't help but feel hurt and dismissed. "Henry, you're not even giving me a chance to prove myself. You're just shutting me down without even considering it."

He remained resolute. "Sophia, there are plenty of other internships out there. Why don't you explore those options?"

I felt like my dreams were slipping through my fingers, and I couldn't hold back my frustration any longer. "Henry, it's not just about the internship. It feels like you don't believe in me, like you don't think I'm capable of succeeding on my own."

He glanced at me, his expression softening. "Sophia, that's not true. I believe in you, and I know you're capable of great things. I just don't want our relationship to be complicated by working together."

I couldn't help but roll my eyes. "Henry, we've been together for a while now. If we can't handle working together, what does that say about our relationship?"

He pulled into the school parking lot and parked the car, his expression conflicted. "Sophia, I need some time to think about this. Can we please drop it for now?"

I was angry and hurt, but I nodded reluctantly. "Fine, Henry. We'll drop it for now."

As I stepped out of the car, I couldn't help but feel a mix of emotions. I was frustrated that he couldn't see things from my perspective, but I also loved him and didn't want to jeopardize our relationship.

Just as I was about to walk away, Henry reached out and gently pulled me closer. Our eyes locked, and in that moment, I could see the love and concern in his gaze.

"I promise I'll think about it, Sophia," he said softly. "I don't want to make any hasty decisions. Can we at least agree on that?"

I nodded, my anger softening as I looked into his eyes. "Okay, Henry. I appreciate that."

He leaned in, and our lips met in a tender kiss, a silent promise of love and understanding. As we pulled away, I knew that even though we disagreed on this particular issue, our relationship was strong enough to weather the storm. We had faced challenges before, and I had no doubt that we could face this one together.

As I walked into school, my heart felt lighter, and I couldn't help but smile. No matter what the future held, I was grateful to have Henry by my side, supporting me in my dreams and endeavors, even if it took a little time and patience to get there.

******

I was strolling along the sidewalk, lost in thought when I heard a familiar voice calling my name. I sighed inwardly, knowing exactly who it was before I even turned around. Jason.

"Hey, Sophia," he said, a hint of hesitation in his voice.

I forced a smile, trying to appear casual even though I had been avoiding him since he had confessed his feelings for me. "Hey, Jason, what's up?"

He frowned, his brows furrowing in concern. "You've been avoiding me, haven't you?"

I hesitated for a moment before nodding reluctantly. "Yeah, I have. I just needed some space."

Jason's expression softened, and he sighed. "I get it, Sophia, but it's been tough not talking to you."

Just when I thought the conversation might take a civil turn, Jason dropped a bombshell. "By the way, I saw you when Henry dropped you off the other day."

My heart skipped a beat. "What? How did you...?"

Jason interrupted, his tone accusing. "I saw you two kissing, Sophia."

I felt my cheeks flush with embarrassment. "Jason, that's none of your business."

He folded his arms, a bitter smile playing on his lips. "Is that why you rejected me? Because you're dating a man twice your age?"

I clenched my fists, feeling my anger rise. "Jason, it's not about his age. It's about how I feel about him."

He scoffed, his tone dripping with sarcasm. "Oh, I see. So, what's so great about him, huh? Is it his money? His maturity? Or is it just that he's not me?"

I took a deep breath, trying to remain calm. "It's none of those things, Jason. It's about the connection we share and the way he makes me feel."

Jason's eyes blazed with anger, and he didn't hold back. "Well, forgive me for caring about you, Sophia. Forgive me for thinking you deserve better than a man who's old enough to be your dad."

I felt my patience wearing thin, and before I could stop myself, I raised my hand and slapped him across the face. The sound echoed in the air, and Jason's shocked expression was almost comical.

"You have no right to judge my choices, Jason," I spat, my voice trembling with anger. "I deserve to be with someone who respects me and doesn't throw shade at my decisions."

Jason rubbed his cheek where I had slapped him, his eyes wide with surprise. "Sophia, I..."

But I wasn't interested in hearing any more of his excuses or judgments. I turned on my heel and stormed off, leaving Jason behind with his wounded pride.

As I walked away, I couldn't help but feel a mix of emotions. I had stood up for myself and my choices, but I also couldn't shake the feeling that my friendship with Jason might be irreparably damaged. Sometimes, honesty and assertiveness came at a high cost, and I could only hope that in time, he would understand and respect my decisions, even if he didn't agree with them.
