"it's better now," cami said breezily, skating past the patch of awkwardness. "i really focused on work—you know—and they gained a lot of trust in me. i'm living closer to work, now; not so much of a drive."
she paused, hoping she hadn't talked too much, but drew just prompted her further with, "what have you been working on lately?"
and so she told him, and their drinks came, and talking came easily after that. drew was happy to just sit and watch cami; the light in her eyes when she talked about things that made her happy, or she was passionate about. she looked pale for summertime, and he wondered with concern how much sleep, food, and free time she was having, but he certainly wasn't going to bring it up. she looked beautiful regardless; he would be dumb if he didn't notice the way the guy working the counter and another young man working at a different table were glancing over at her occasionally.
they talked much longer after they had finished their drinks, and walked around town afterwards. and when they said goodbye, they hugged fully—drew opening her door from her and waving as she drove away.
the biggest smile was on his face.
