As we journeyed to Melbourne by car, the hours rolled by – five to be precise. At every 7-11 pit stop, our car and our stomachs were refueled. Beyond the grassy and treed expanse, the road reached an abrupt halt, leaving barren land – no grass, no trees, just unyielding drought. Though the road was presumably closed for a reason, my best friend Sandra and I disregarded that as we aimed for Melbourne, where a new mansion awaited.

With a swift stop, Sandra hopped out, maneuvering orange road cones aside before rejoining the driver's seat. "Isn't that illegal?" I quizzed, met with a dismissive response: "Nah, no one's here to stop us." She accelerated past 190, and my heart raced, anticipating a collision that couldn't happen unless a hidden barrier lay ahead.

An hour later, greenery materialized, and a grand jacaranda tree loomed. A sign was attached, its contents hidden until approached. As Sandra halted and started reading aloud, it revealed an ominous directive: "After passing this tree, DON'T LOOK BACK. Proceed until spotting a mango tree with a similar sign, but black writing. Ground shaking? Close windows, lock doors, shut eyes. Beware of scratching, howling, growling, cries for help. NEVER OPEN."

Unconvinced, I urged onward, but Sandra's trembling grasp and tear-filled eyes betrayed her terror. She spoke of a man vanishing after ignoring the sign's warning, a tale she'd read and watched. It was unnerving, witnessing her so shaken, as she usually exuded bravery. Minutes turned to panic, darkness descended, and anxiety escalated. Tears flowed, hands quivered, and despite my pleas, her fear remained unyielding.

Time blurred, the ground quaked prematurely, and in our distress, windows locked, and lights extinguished. We huddled in the backseat without looking back, preparing for the imminent ordeal. Howls, scratches, and attempts to open doors haunted the car. Our silent sobbing was punctuated by the desperate intrusion, persisting for minutes. The forest fell silent, only to be replaced by approaching footsteps. We opened our eyes cautiously, finding nothing, until a woman collapsed before us, her wide eyes locking onto ours. Panic raced through her, followed by a cacophony from the woods. "GO!" she screamed, propelling us to speed at 300 mph – a velocity unknown to us, but necessary for our survival.

The road stretched ahead, a blur of asphalt and uncertainty as we raced to escape the unsettling encounter. The wind howled around us, drowning out our thoughts, while the speedometer crept even higher. With every passing moment, fear and adrenaline coursed through our veins, propelling us forward like a runaway train.

As we hurtled through the night, the forest's eerie symphony faded into the distance, replaced by the monotonous hum of the engine and the rhythmic beat of our hearts. The woman's desperate plea to "GO!" echoed in our minds, fueling our determination to distance ourselves from whatever malevolent force had pursued her.

Hours ticked by, and our frenzied flight eventually began to slow as the initial panic waned. The road ahead gradually transformed, and signs of civilization reappeared on the horizon. Neon lights painted streaks across the dark canvas, indicating a nearby town. It was a stark contrast to the isolation we had just escaped, and a glimmer of hope settled within us.

We pulled into the town, the car's engine purring to a halt. Our breaths came in ragged gasps, our bodies tense from the adrenaline-fueled drive. We exchanged a cautious glance, our eyes reflecting a mixture of relief and lingering unease. The town seemed normal, the bustling streets lined with shops, cafes, and the comings and goings of regular life.

Though we had escaped the clutches of the forest, our minds were far from at ease. We knew that the woman's warning, the haunting scratching, and cries, were real. Our curiosity and dread warred within us as we contemplated what lay beyond that ominous forest and those unsettling signs.
