Her fear has been validated by the constant looks she gets at school and the judgmental whispers she hears around Hawkins. Everyone knew of the Rayne family's deepest nightmare, and all anyone did was judge them for it.
People tend to stay away from her so that they can keep up appearances, and her neighbor is no different in that sense. However, Steve has always found her intriguing despite her past.
