Do you remember, we were sittin' there by the water?
You put your arm around me for the first time
You made a rebel of a careless man's careful daughter
You are the best thing that's ever been mine.
Belly Conklin was a kid who was careful about who...
Belly Conklin was a young girl who faced the world's heartache by herself. Her brother, Steven, grew up mainly with their father while Belly lived with their mother. Belly and Steven were the kids of John Conklin and Laurel Park, the couple who tried with their relationship, but when Belly was eleven years old, John divorced from Laurel. The kids made their own decisions who they were to go with and it came that Steven pushed his sister away. Belly was thus alone. She had her best friend, Taylor, by her side to help her through every huge moment that came through her life, but it was still a hard decision that Belly had to come to terms with.
Cousins Beach was the one place where everyone had gotten together. Laurel's best friend was Susannah Fisher, and with that her sons, Conrad and Jeremiah, became the best friends of Belly and Steven. Steven would join his mother and sister during the months of June and August to spend them with the Fisher family, and to have some summer fun with his own friends. But, after the divorce, Steven had excluded his sister in a lot of things. They were at the same place, during the same months, for the exact same amount of time, and with the same people. But, as the years went on, Belly's relationship with her brother got more distance.
Now Belly was 16, and she had hoped that things would go back to normal with her and her mother returning to Cousins for the summer. But, it wasn't that simple. Laurel had to go on a book tour that summer, and while Belly was fine without it, her mother had insisted that she would still go to Cousins on her own. Belly was traveling down to the beach in Massachusetts on her own while she didn't know what would happen. She knew that Steven had traveled down on his own as he was closer to the summer house, but she felt a kind of nerve in her stomach. She was sitting on the bus, waiting for that one moment when she would calm down, and it would feel like summer. But she felt nervous, for more reasons than she should. She heard her phone buzzing and smiled at the text message.
Conrad - How far are you?
Conrad Fisher was the one boy who Belly had trusted through everything. It was hard not to trust him. He was the boy with the green eyes and the brown hair. The boy who taught her how to shag, and the boy who she could tell anything to. But she didn't know how majorly she would fall for him.
Conrad was the 18-year-old son of Susannah and the older brother of Jeremiah. He was the smart kid in high school and he was the athlete. He was the serious and responsible older brother, and he was the son that Susannah could always rely on. He was the boy who taught Belly how to shag, the boy who had won her a polar bear at state fair, and when the right time came, he was also the boy that would go to college and steal Belly's heart. Conrad had graduated form high school, and although sport was something that he could still do, this summer he wanted to spend time with his mother and brother. When the family learned that Laurel wasn't joining them this year at the summer house, Susannah was definitely down, but Conrad was the one to contact Belly.
"Am I supposed to wonder why I am getting a call from Conrad Fisher when he's supposed to be busy with his finals?"
Belly's voice sounded soft, but also like she was tired, and Conrad could think that her sophomore year of high school was a lot more rough than she thought it would be. Conrad had smiled while looking at the picture of the four teenagers that one year.
