Socksfor1 POV

I remember first being here, wherever we are anyways. A vast, open space just for me and my friends for a lifetime. It was more than I could ever ask for in my life, being safe and surrounded by the people I really enjoy being with. We all loved this place like it was a child, taking care of it constantly and protecting it like it was our own lives on the line. Nothing could best such awesomeness of a home, nothing that I know of.

In living the times in this space, we've learned many survival tactics and tricks to benefit our survival. One would be, and probably the most important, don't go beyond. None of us have ever seen what lies past our little defence boarders and I don't think we want to even find out. It's rather too dangerous to go astray, so we always go together to hunt for our necessities. Yes, we may have full access to the internet and stuff, but we have come off loose from the grasp of the judgemental eyes of the people. We only use it for absolute immediate emergencies, or just simple little things because we're not so strict about it. What's the matter with a little internet at times? Nothing, for us at least. Besides, we can easily make many inventions and sustain ourselves already. Hard work always pays off in the long run.

The home when I first got it, I wouldn't imagine it becoming a full one home base. Everyone equally contributed their weight to full on make sure that this home of ours will stay up for the rest of our lifetimes. It was something we could all agree on, the survival of all, as we were all important to the crew one way or another. But in my opinion, the best part was the efficient drawbridge. That was my favourite new feature of them all, haha. Still is. But I'm glad we've gotten this far, and I hope to make the most of it while it lasts.

"Hey, Socks! What are you up to?" Laff calls out to me. He has come back from going into the wild, with some fresh fish and meat in their bags and baskets. "Nothing much, but looks like you've gotten a great catch!" I compliment, as he smiles. "I helped this time!" Nadwe exclaims, running up to Laff's pace of walking. "He sure did! I believe you caught a.." Laff starts but Nadwe finishes for him. "A rabbit! I'm getting good at the bow and arrow." Nadwe says enthusiastically, grabbing one of the bags to put inside. Blaza and Tbh follow behind Laff, chattering amongst themselves. "Did you find anything new out there?" I ask them, and they shrug. "Nope, hoping one day we find out something really cool though!" Tbh smiles and Blaza nods in agreement.

As they head inside, I look back to the forest, thinking to myself. I've never told them I actually wanted to see the true beauty out there, that I'd be willing to risk it all just to be satisfied with myself. Maybe one day I could convince them, but we'd need to be extra prepared for such an event. I guess it's still a possibility it could happen, though. All I can do for now is imagine.

It was getting dark, as the woods always get more dangerous when it's nighttime. I finish hammering in the last nail, and go inside to draw the bridge. Once it was in its locked position, I go to the main area, where everyone was waiting for their awaited dinner to be served. They were currently playing an intense and heated game of classic UNO, with much unnecessary shouting included. "UNO! HAHA, TRICKED YA FELLAS!" Laff exclaims, putting down his second last card in his hands. The other groaned, but they were still whispering amongst each other. It's like they helped each other to being each other down, if you think about it. It would be rather too late to join their ongoing match, so I head to the kitchen to see what was cooking.

Tbh and Meme were there, preparing something that smelled absolutely delightful to my senses. They were having a lot of fun I could tell, laughing away as the kitchen was a whole mess. I suppose I didn't mind that much, since they were still cooking and having fun too. I sneak behind their backs and grabbed a tablecloth to help assist them with their cleaning. I didn't have anything better to do anyways. Quickly, I started scrubbing away at the much dirty surfaces that was covered in the spilled ingredients. Somehow, they didn't notice me, they must've been too busy watching their food or talking to each other about who knows what. After finishing a simple wipe down, I left the kitchen and went up to my room.

It was my space to be me, away from all the shenanigans that everyone else had to offer. Sure, I still liked it when I had fun, but I also needed a space to relax. Everyone does eventually. I get myself dressed for bed, and head to my balcony to look over the wilderness once more. The wind blew, the leaves rustled, and the animals called out to each other. It couldn't be complete without the glittering night sky, with the moon above it all. I have been known to always love space, and one day I will be amongst the stars, one way or another. Pulling out my telescope, I look through the hole to see the wonders of space much closer than I could ever imagine. They were bright, and they looked unreal to me. It always made me feel at peace whenever I do this.

After doing some stargazing, I decide to go on my computer to check up on the latest news around the world. There wasn't really much happening that caught my attention at first glance, but as I read throughly, something caught my immediate attention. It read: "Possible Zombie Apocalypse To Happen? Researchers and scientists have recently discovered a risky way to bring back the deceased, but it comes with many consequences. This action is still a theory, but it is possible in the near future. The lab subjects have been actively tested, and come back with zombie-like attributes. Can zombies be the next big thing for our planet, positive and negatively?"  Huh, that was a cool topic to read about. Bringing fiction into the real world sure does sound amusing, but also scary to even consider. But even so, that's why Dino and Woolf existed, experiments. Never did they tell me how it did happen, but maybe I could get a confession out of them someday.

It was probably time for dinner, so I close my laptop and go back down to the main areas of the base. Everyone was at the dinner table, as Tbh and Meme prepared the food in large food containers. "Yo, Socks!" Tbh greets me, as I wave back. Meme gives me a smile, as he places the food on the table. He goes to sit down too as Tbh finishes cleaning up the surrounding areas. "Thanks for cleaning up for us, even if it was just a little bit." Tbh thanks me. "How'd you know I did? Thought you were too busy putting finishing touches on the food with Memey." I ask. He laughs, and says "You were the only one not playing UNO, so it was a bit obvious. Plus, counters can't clean themselves, haha!" I nod, and laugh with him as we head to sit down together.

As usual, the food they made was absolutely appetizing, as everyone seemed to be thrilled of having such amazing cooks. "Pretty good, huh?" Meme asks us, and a bunch of us nods in unison. "Glad." Tbh adds, smiling. As we finish up eating our food, a loud bang was heard from outside. Startled, many of us go to the windows to try to pinpoint what happened. It was not visible from where we are, but thick smoke was coming from outside our cautionary boarders. Everyone was now chatting about their suspicions with the sudden interruption, as I draw the bridge, hoping for a better glance.

Stepping outside, I instantly smelled heavy amounts of ash and smoke in the air. To my suspicion, it smelled something like a fire, but the smoke only stayed in one part of the area. Maybe it was an explosion of some sort, but it's not like I can really check it out for myself. That's the thing about our little setup, our curious little minds can't always be rewarded with the answer so easily. It's always "it's dangerous" or "you don't know what's out there." But sometimes, I wanted to break my own rules, go out there to prove a point of some sort. That we shouldn't be living this isolated and delusional lives, and go explore to see what the world really has to offer for the humankind. Yet, it's hard to sneak past. One day, I'm sure, I will be able to escape, just for a little view.

"See anything, Socks?" Blaza asks me, coming to stand beside me on the drawbridge. "No, sorry Blaza." I respond, waving my hands so I don't breathe too much smoke. "We should probably go out patrol the nearby accessible areas tomorrow, see if we can spot the problem. For now, tell the others to not worry, we'll figure it out later." I say. "Sounds good, Socks." Blaza smiles, heading back inside. After a little bit, I head inside too, putting the bridge in its proper protective position. It was probably nothing to worry about for ourselves, so we all head to our rooms for bedtime. I go to my balcony, trying to sneak a glance, but all I received was a load of smoke in my face. Closing my balcony, I went to my bathroom and stared into the mirror.

Surely there was nothing to worry about, and it wouldn't effect any of us, right? Well, that's what I hope, at least. Something tells me that I should go investigate, even if it is not listening to my own safety precautions. I would be daring enough to go and risk my life for the safety of them all. It was my responsibility after all to look out for our crew, and make sure everything is in order. Tomorrow, I'll settle this out, I'll make sure it will all be okay. Heading to bed, I can't seem to get my mind off of it. It's like it wanted me to leave, come see what beauty it was face to face. But that would have to wait.

Goodnight to all the stars.
Put me in your fate.
