Kelly stood by, arms crossed, her brow furrowed as she fumed silently. She couldn't believe that Abby was only focusing on Maddie and Ethan's solos, completely overlooking Paige and Brooke's hard work. Finally, unable to hold back any longer, Kelly stormed toward Abby with a fiery determination.

"Abby! Why aren't you running Paige and Brooke's solos too? They've worked just as hard as Ethan and Maddie!" she complained loudly, her face red with anger.

Abby shot her a withering glare and barked, "I'm running their solos because I know they're going to win in their divisions! I don't have time for distractions or attitude right now!"

Not one to back down so easily, Kelly argued back, her voice rising. "Paige could beat Maddie any day; they're in the same dance division! And you know Brooke and Ethan are competing against each other too! Why are you playing favorites?!"

Enraged, Abby yelled at her to shut up. The tension between them was palpable, growing by the second. Finally, fed up with the shouting match and unwilling to let it continue any longer, Kelly made a bold decision.

"That's it! I'm pulling Paige and Brooke's solos!" she declared vehemently. "Let's see how you do without them!"

Brooke's eyes welled up with tears at her mother's words; she couldn't believe that all of her hard work would go to waste. As the situation escalated around them, she found comfort in an unlikely place: Ethan's embrace.

Ethan's arms wrapped around her as she hugged him tight, sobbing into his shoulder. He gently rubbed her back, offering a silent promise of support. Not everyone may have believed in their talents, but they knew they were strong together.

Ethan knew how much Brooke had been looking forward to her solo performance at the dance competition. It had crushed her spirit when her mom, Kelly, unexpectedly pulled the plug on the performance just an hour before the event. Brooke's disappointment was palpable, and Ethan couldn't stand to see his friend in pain.

Determined to lift her spirits, Ethan walked up to Brooke as she sat despondently on the sidelines of the preparation area. "Hey," he said softly, trying not to startle her. "I know you're upset about your solo being canceled, but there's no reason you shouldn't enjoy today. How about you sit here and watch me practice before I go on stage? Maybe it'll take your mind off things for a little while."

Brooke looked up, her eyes red from the tears that she held back. She hesitated for a moment, mulling over Ethan's offer. A part of her wanted to sulk and wallow in self-pity, but she knew deep down that Ethan was right – there was no reason not to try and make the best of it.

"Alright," she responded eventually, forcing a small smile for his sake. "I guess watching you dance is better than dwelling on things I can't change."

Her response brought a genuine smile to Ethan’s face. He knew that this might be a small step in helping Brooke heal from this setback.

Ethan set up his music and went through his warm-up exercises while Brooke watched from the sidelines, admiring his dedication and grace. She started to feel some of her old confidence bubbling up inside her as she observed how focused and sure of himself he was during practice.

Before long, it was time for Ethan's stage performance; he glanced over at Brooke one last time before heading out into the spotlight. Brooke clapped fervently from the sidelines – even though her own performance had been taken from her, she was determined to be there for Ethan and support him in any way she could. She couldn't help but feel a surge of pride as she watched him execute each move flawlessly on stage.

Ethan's solo

Ethan stepped out onto the stage, barefoot and clad in a simple black costume that accentuated his fluid movements. As the melancholic melody filled the auditorium, he began to dance. His movements conveyed the harrowing story of his pain; the loss he had suffered when his siblings were taken away by suicide. Every spin and pirouette evoked the whirlwind of emotions he had been through - anger, sorrow, confusion - it all poured from him as he moved across the floor.

He danced with an unimaginable intensity that spoke volumes about the nightmarish journey he had been on, trying to hold onto any semblance of hope and understanding amidst the darkness that enveloped him. Ethan's family tragedy had undoubtedly shaped him as a person, but this piece allowed him to express his grief in a way words could never fully achieve.

The choreography was strategically designed for maximum impact. It consisted of eerie and chilling movements that mirrored Ethan's internal struggle with depression and despair. He leaped into the air and landed with a jarring thud on one knee, head bowed down in submission to the crushing weight of his loss.

The routine took a sudden shift when Ethan sprang back to life with a determined expression spread across his face. His dance transitioned into something more empowering and hopeful: from slow, controlled spins to rapid jumps filled with courage and defiance. This change symbolized his resolve to fight against letting grief consume him entirely - embracing the pain without becoming completely shattered by it.

Abby watched intently from her seat in the audience, captivated by the raw emotion and honesty of Ethan's performance. In her many years of coaching and mentoring young talent, she had never seen anything quite like it. The strength and vulnerability he showcased through his dance were moving beyond words and served to remind everyone present that even in the darkest times, there was still light to be found.

Brooke's pov

Brooke stood on the sidelines, her heart swelling with pride as she watched Ethan dance on stage. The grace and elegance of his movements captivated the audience, and everyone in the room could feel the energy he poured into his performance. As tears welled up in Brooke's eyes, she couldn't help but feel a lingering sadness that she couldn't join him up there, that she couldn't express herself through dance like she used to. But despite that heartache, she found herself feeling happier than she had been in ages.

While standing there among the cheering crowd, Brooke realized that her joy stemmed from watching Ethan's passion and dedication come to life in his dance. It was a pure, unbridled happiness unlike anything she had ever experienced before, and it was all thanks to him.

As soon as Ethan finished his final pirouette and stepped off the stage into the sidelines, Brooke couldn't contain her emotions any longer. She lunged forward and wrapped her arms around him, hugging him tightly as if her life depended on it. Her face pressed against his chest, feeling his heart race from exhilaration and adrenaline.

Ethan was taken aback by this sudden outpouring of affection but found himself melting into Brooke's embrace. There was something about her presence that gave him a strange feeling of comfort – one that seemed almost foreign after being so wrapped up in his relationship with Kalani. He couldn't ignore how distant Kalani had become recently, where as Brooke had always been there for him.

In that tender moment on the sidelines, with Brooke's arms wrapped around him and their breaths mingling together in a symphony of shared happiness, Ethan felt something shift within him. This warmth and connection were undeniable – unlike anything he'd felt with Kalani lately – and it made him question where his true feelings lay.

But as they reluctantly pulled apart from their emotional embrace, both Brooke and Ethan were left to wonder what these feelings meant for their futures – and how they'd navigate the complexity of their relationships from here on out.
