The following morning, Adonis tried making instrumentals on his phone while munching on some red grapes from the bag, but he knew it wasn't for him. Even though he wasn't the best at it, he did it to distract himself from his worries. He was reflecting on the dispute he had with his mother the previous evening, and he found it amusing how callous she had been about it. Even after Adonis repeatedly described what she did to Nahnie and Nyla, his mother still didn't believe she had done anything wrong.
He couldn't tell his dad about how his mother reacted the day before because he wasn't never at home. He doesn't tell his parents everything but, this was something that needed to be brought to their attention. He hadn't spoken to his mother at all that morning. She called his phone multiple times but he just rejected it. He didn't care.
As Adonis searched their refrigerator for something to eat, his phone was visible in his pocket. He noticed that it was someone he's been waiting on a call on and haven't heard from in months after he saw the person's caller I.D.
"Yoooo! What's goin' on, Ezra?"
Adonis exclaimed into the phone after overhearing laughter. Since they were in eighth grade, Ezra and Adonis have been tight friends for an extremely lengthy period. Still staying strong after ten years of friendship. Adonis thought his friend forgot about him after not speaking for so long.
"Yo, Don!" Ezra laughs into the phone. "My boy, It's been a minute!"
"Damn, right!" Adonis spoke excitedly, taking a seat on the couch in the living room. "How was the move to brooklyn?"
"Dawg, you wouldn't even believe it!" Ezra calls out. "We're back in New Orleans."
"You being deadass—"
"Adonis!" His mother belted from the front door, instantly making him groan in annoyance just from the sound of her voice. He was now agitated. "Get the groceries for me, please."
"Hold on, Ra."
"Bet."
He put his phone on mute and passed his mother, who was holding a few things. Like he usually would if she was carrying too much, he didn't stop her. It caught her off guard. His mother made the choice to work the night shift at her workplace following their dispute. The only place she could feel sane was there. Due to their hectic job schedules, both of his parents were rarely at home. When they were present, they either slept, watched television, or tried to meet up with old acquaintances.
He returned inside and placed the goods on top of the kitchen island before proceeding upstairs to his room. He locked the door after closing it, just in case his mother decided to barge in at any time. He pulled his phone from his pocket, unmuted Ezra, and then resumed speaking.
"I'm back, my fault." Adonis apologizes. "You can hear me?"
"Yeah, you good, brodie." Ezra spoke. "But, I was saying that we're back in New Orleans."
"For good??"
"I think so." Ezra states. "As far as i know, we're gonna be here for a little minute."
"We definitely gotta meet up, unfortunately today, I see I'm gonna be busy later on though." Adonis expressed. "But, why' y'all came back?"
"My dad didn't like it." Ezra laughs. "He said that New York was just way too much for him."
"It's a big city, that's understandable." Adonis agreed. "Yo, have you told Carter and Wyatt about you being back? It's been 3 years, my boy."
"Nah, haven't even got to them yet." Ezra chuckles. "But, I'm planning on hitting them up in a couple days after I get settled back in. You tryna play 1v1 in baskets?"
