"Alright, you two," Abby called out to grab their attention. "Enough practice on the solo for now. We're going to move on to your duet."

Ethan and Mackenzie exchanged excited glances before making their way over to Abby, ready to take on the challenge ahead.

"Now, I want you two to immerse yourselves in this performance," Abby instructed firmly. "This isn't just another dance routine – it's a portrayal of the highs and lows that can only be experienced by siblings."

As they began practicing the duet under Abby's watchful eye, it was evident that even with the cast hindering Ethan's movements, his talent and drive were unwavering. Whether it was a tender embrace or a playful push-and-pull during their performance, every move was executed flawlessly.

With each run-through of the routine, Mackenzie and Ethan continued to delve deeper into their sibling roles. They cracked jokes in between practices and supported one another when certain moves proved challenging due to Ethan's cast. Abby sat back contently, knowing she had made an excellent choice when selecting these two talented dancers.

Day of the competition

Ethan and Mackenzie paced nervously backstage, each stealing anxious glances at the other as they prepared themselves for their upcoming performance. The smell of hairspray and sweat filled the musty air, while the buzz of excitement danced in their ears. This was the biggest competition of the year, and they were up next.

Just minutes away from taking the stage, they watched Maddie and Brooke performing their intricate and upbeat dance routine. Their impressive displays of skill sent shivers down Ethan and Mackenzie's spines; it was both an inspiration and an uncomfortable reminder that they had to follow such a spectacular act.

The music finally faded out, indicating the end of Maddie and Brooke's routine. The audience erupted into raucous applause, confirming just how incredible their performance truly was. Ethan squeezed Mackenzie's hand as they took a collective deep breath, knowing that their moment to shine had arrived.

As they made their way toward the stage, their pounding hearts echoed in their ears, drowning out the sound of Maddie and Brooke's final bows. Standing in the wing just before entering the spotlight, Mackenzie whispered to Ethan, "This is it – we need to give it our best, no matter what."

As soon as the music started for their sad sibling duet, Ethan felt himself relax into a calm focus. Their fluid movements painted a story of love and loss on the stage, contrasting beautifully with Maddie and Brooke's lively routine moments before.

Mackenzie let herself become completely vulnerable as she embodied her character's overwhelming emotions. Staring into her brother's eyes on stage, they shared a connection that surpassed any musical element of their dance.

The final notes rang throughout the auditorium as Ethan held Mackenzie close in his arms at center stage. Tears flowed freely down both their cheeks glistening in the bright stage lights - a testament to how deeply invested they were in telling their story.

As the audience applauded generously, Ethan and Mackenzie managed weak smiles, their hearts still aching from the emotions they'd poured into their performance. Making their way offstage, they were met by Abby and Gianna, both visibly moved – tears streaming down their faces as they embraced their students in appreciation for the raw emotion.

Maddie's pov

Maddie couldn't help but feel an overwhelming wave of jealousy and disappointment as she watched her younger sister, Mackenzie, rehearsing with Ethan for their upcoming sibling duet. Of course everyone loved the performance, and they were the perfect pair with flawless synchronization. However, Maddie was torn apart by the thought that it could have been her out there on stage with Ethan.

Maddie's relationship with Mackenzie had been strained for some time now. Despite their shared love for dance and the desire to support each other in their pursuits, something had always been amiss between the sisters. Whether it stemmed from misunderstanding or unintentional rivalry, they both struggled to overcome this divide.

All Maddie truly wanted was to form a strong bond with her little sister, to share in their successes and encourage one another in their dreams. But now, as she witnessed Mackenzie's gracefulness in perfect harmony with Ethan’s skillful steps, she felt like a mere shadow in comparison.

Ethan had been Maddie’s close friend and occasional partner in dances ever since they first met at the dance studio several weeks ago. Their chemistry was undeniable on and off the dance floor, and deep inside her heart, Maddie longed to share this magical experience with him once more.

But tonight would not be that night.

As she stood backstage during the performance, Maddie did her best to be happy for her sister and friend. However, the longing she felt for a moment of unity between herself and Mackenzie pained her deeply. It seemed as though no matter how hard she tried, her expectations of what a perfect sibling relationship should look like just weren’t meant to be reached.

After the final bow was taken and tears shed by family members at their beautiful duet, Maddie retreated to her room to confront these feelings on her own. A letter she'd written to Mackenzie in an attempt to mend their relationship lay untouched on her desk. With a trembling hand, she picked up the pen, adding a single sentence that summarized her heartache: "I miss the days when we danced together as sisters, not just competitors."
