The Fire Inside

It heats up inside me
The fire
We are shamed
We are forgotten
Not given the rights of others
We are beaten
We are broken
By those who call themselves "family"
It heats up inside me
The fire
And though
You have raised me
And cared for me my whole life
Suddenly all that is gone
When I speak a few forbidden words
Everything has changed
"Who are you" you'll say
"I did not bring you up to be this way"
You do not accept me for who I choose to love
It heats up inside me
The fire
I do not understand
Why you don't think we are  the same
I am equal to you
I am equal to you
And I am equal to all of you
Why can't you just treat me fair
We may be beaten
We may be broken
By those who call themselves "human"
But would a human really exclude another because they are a little different?
Don't answer that...
But no more
I will stand up
Against your slurs
Against the hatred in your eyes
I will walk forward with pride
It heats up inside me
The fire
