Marcus was running late.

He watched as the bus drove away, unable to do anything.

For a minute, the world seemed to slow.

After standing still for awhile, he pulled out his phone and opened up messages.

Marcus: i just missed the 3:45 bus im gonna be a bit late im so so sorry (sad cat sticker)

Marcus stared down at his phone, feeling powerless and bad. He was heading over to Cog's place to cook him dinner. In fact, Marcus left early so he'd have just enough time to make Cog a dessert. He was planning to make a fruit tart with fresh fruit he found in the market earlier that day- Cog didn't like chocolate, and the fruit would look bright on the table.

As Marcus started to zone out, his phone buzzed.

Cog: Hey, don't worry, it's fine. It's a good thing that you left early, we'll have a few hours like we normally do.

Marcus glared at his phone. It wasn't fine that he left early, because now the tart will be rushed and he didn't want Cog to have to help. The dinner and dessert would made by Marcus and Cog would be able to relax.

Marcus started to type, fingers dancing over the keys, unsure of what to say.

M: but still i left early and yet its pointless

C: It's not pointless. Anytime you're coming over it's not pointless.

Marcus smiled at his phone. Cog could be so cheesy sometimes.

The two continued to text for awhile until the next bus came- throughout the whole ride, the two kept texting.

Cog's phone stopped buzzing a few minutes ago. The doorbell suddenly rang. He jumped up, swiftly walking over to the door.

Cog opened the door with a warm smile. He was wearing a hoodie and joggers though it was the middle of summer.
"Y-you look nice," Cog flustered, stepping aside to let Marcus inside, staring at his yellow croptop with a smiling bee on it.

Marcus stepped in, heading over to the kitchen. "Thank you- I thought you'd like this outfit!"

"Don't dress for my eyes," Cog sighed, following Marcus, "I thought we'd been over this."

"I like how I feel in this outfit, and I thought you'd like this. It's a win-win situation."

Marcus grabbed a pot and started to fill it with water.

"Still, prioritize your comfort. You look good in anything," Cog spoke, saying the last part quieter. "Also you're not super late. It's only 4:30. You don't have to cook immediately- we could always order takeout or something and watch a movie."

"Yea, well, the bus got me behind." Marcus grumbled. "Plus, I wanted to make something extra. I know pasta doesn't take long to cook, but I'd still like to make it nicely.

Cog opened the bag with the fruit. "Is there anything I can do to help- and why do you have fruit if you're making pasta?"

"I don't want you to help. The whole point of me cooking dinner is so that you can relax. And the fruit was for dessert."

"Marcus, I don't mind helping. If anything, it feels awkward to sit around as you do all this work for me. And what do you mean "was" for dessert? I can help make it- don't trash it because of time."

"Don't feel awkward!" Marcus half-wailed, "thats the last thing I want you to feel! Also, I don't want to bring over all this stuff and force you to make it."

"If I didn't want to do it, then I'd tell you." Cog mumbled. "At least let me help with dessert."

Marcus sighed, knowing he lost this argument. He had Cog cut the fruit and lay out the tart as he started to put the noodles in the pot. Together, they made the filling and waited for the crust to cook.

Eventually, dinner was made. At a fair time too. Marcus plated for the two of them, leaving the tart in the fridge to get nice and cool.

"Nice plating, Master Chef," Cog said with a smile.

Marcus grinned. "Thanks- my culinary school went over plating for like two months. I was bound to learn something."

The two ate- Cog eating rather quickly while Marcus ate at a slower pace, leading the conversation. When they finished eating Cog insisted on washing the dishes- another argument Marcus lost- while Marcus plated the fruit tart.

The two ate dessert off the kitchen counter. Cog would've eaten the cake without cutting it, but they knew Marcus would kill him if they did that.
Cog's face was almost beaming- food always made him happy, and knowing that he did a lot of the making of it helped add to the flavor.
"Did you get this fruit today? It tastes straight off the tree!"

Marcus smiled, finishing his slice, "I got it from the market on the way here- I knew it'd taste better fresher."

"Maybe we can try planting our own fruit!"

They both laughed at the idea of that- they were going to graduate soon and knew they wouldn't have enough time for a tree or a nice bush to grow. Still, the idea was nice.

"Maybe," Marcus said, "we can start off with something simple. Like basil or mint? Those are pretty hard to kill."

"Anything sounds good to me- you're the chef." Cog replied

"Maybe later this month then."

Marcus smiled and watched as Cog finished what was probably his fourth slice of tart.

After the kitchen was finally clean, the two laid down on Cog's bed to watch a movie.

"Well, I know we're not watching horror. So what'll it be?" Marcus asked.

"I saw this romcom movie- it came out years ago, but it still should be good. It's called 'Love Actually'."

Marcus sighed in a happy way. At school, before the two became friends, he would've never guessed that Cog was this much of a romantic. Well, more like a hopeless romantic. Marcus thought that if he ever got to date Cog that he'd be as calm as he was at school- but Marcus was wrong. Cog is such a funny and amazing person all while being smart and sensible. Marcus felt like the luckiest person on earth. He had great friends who accepted him and supported him through his transitioning, looking at who he truly was inside. He got lucky that the person he fell for- the beautiful, amazing person he fell for, actually liked him back. And that they were dating. Okay and open with it. That Cog never made him feel awkward in his own body, but instead, right- like he finally knew who he was.

"How did I get so lucky..." Marcus whispered to himself, forgetting to think that.

"Mmm?" Cog looked up from his phone- he was going to screen share the movie- and looked up at Marcus. "Did you say something?"

"Huh- oh? I was wondering if you found the movie!" Marcus flustered- Cog already heard dozen of times Marcus's amazement about him and Marcus knew he'd say it a million more times in the future. No need to hear this happy little breakdown, there'll be plenty more in the future.

"Yea it's ready- I'll start it now, if you're ready!"

Marcus grabbed a blanket, throwing it over the two of them, scooting a bit closer to Cog so the blanket would fit over the two of them.

"I'm ready."

Cog put his phone on do not disturb and hit play, resting his head partially on Marcus's shoulder.

In the end, the two stayed up till 1 AM until Marcus fell asleep the last part of the movie- Cog was getting drowsy but wanted to see how it'd end.

The two boys ended up falling asleep on top of each other, Cog falling asleep as the credits started playing. The two had a wonderful evening, and they were both happy it went so perfectly.
