meredith smiles as the sand touches her toes. she leans back into joe's touch. joe wraps his arms around her waist and places his chin on her collarbone. meredith closes her eyes and listens to the relaxing sound of the waves. a comfortable silence falls between the two, but eventually, the silence is broken when meredith starts talking.

"so this is it, huh? one last perfect night on the beach together, and then it's over?" she sighs.

"i guess it's just the way it is meant to be" joe turns meredith around so that they are both facing each other. "i want you to know that this was the best summer i have ever had" he smiles.

"best summer ever" meredith laughs with tears in her eyes.

"hey, don't cry mer. it's just how it's meant to be" he uses both hands to hold meredith's face.

"but what if it's not meant to be this way? what if i'm meant to be yours forever and ever?" she cries.

"if we are meant to be forever and ever, then maybe our story will pick up where we left off later" he looks into her brown eyes. "look my football career is going to start soon and you are going to become the best athletic trainer out there ok? in a few months all this will just be memories"

"it's just that i hate goodbyes" she frowns.

"think of it as this, it's not a goodbye forever. it's a see you later" he comforts meredith as she lays on his chest and listens to his heartbeat.

"i wish i could stay in this moment forever," she mumbles into joe's chest.

"hey don't get all sappy on me obrien, we still have a few hours left together until the sun comes up" he twirls strands of her hair around his finger.

"listen to me burrow, i'm just telling you that i'm not ready to let you go. but i'm going to do it anyways" she smiles.

"now there's that beautiful smile i have been waiting to see all day," joe says taking in every detail of meredith's face.

a comfortable silence falls upon the two again as they watch the beautiful sunrise paint the light blue sky.

"now will you look at that?" meredith laughs. "my mom painted the most beautiful sky as a goodbye to you joe"

"thanks, mrs. obrien, i took great care of your girl all summer" he yells at the sky.

"thank you for picking me up and gluing me back together" she grabs his face and looks into his blue eyes.

"no thank you for reminding me of who i am. i haven't been this version of me in so long. i was always the person olivia wanted me to be, not the person i wanted me to be" joe holds eye contact with meredith for what feels like forever but was probably only a few seconds.
