teaching them to kill; then to die

"well, i received some reports from my subordinates that you bear quite the powerful ability. some kind of insight, is that correct?"

"precisely."

"i used to know someone like that. they had the ability to see-"

"up to five seconds in the future. oda sakunosuke, right?" you smiled at him, at which he genuinely looked surprised. but it only lasted for a brief moment and he was smiling once again.

"so it's true, your ability is as precise as i've heard. tell me, have you ever considered working with a company a little more... lucrative than the detective agency? your ability is quite powerful. i believe you're not only capable enough for, but also deserving of a much greater position than as a small town investigator."

"hmm i dunno..." you tapped your chin in thought. "as much as i'd like to help... i really would hate to betray all my friends at the agency. ooh! here's an idea"

you plucked the quill out from it's holder and flipped the document mori was working on to the other side. you quickly scribbled down your phone number on the sheet of paper, pretending not to notice the slight frown on mori's face from your brazenness.

"that's my phone number! if you ever want me to work for you or help around, give me a call. the only rule is i won't participate in anything that's trying to hurt the agency... all of this for payment, of course."

there were a couple seconds of silence before he began to chuckle. a sudden laugh that lasted about three seconds before he calmed himself down, wiping a tear from his eye.

"well then, wonderful to have you on our side! you're welcome to visit anytime. but for now, there's someone waiting outside for you. i have a nagging feeling you'll be working together in the future, so i'll introduce you now. he'll lead you out to a car that will bring you back to your agency." mori's eyes glimmered as he smiled. it gave you the feeling that there was far more going on in his mind than he was letting on.

but for now, with your conversation complete, you stood from your seat and moved to the exit of his office. you turned back, giving mori one final glance, only to find his attention was on his documents once again. it seems that really was all. you stepped out of the office and into the hall, ready to meet whoever it was mori had wanted you to speak with.

"chuuya?"

you tilted your head to the side. chuuya did seem to really be waiting outside the office, not simply passing by. could chuuya have been the one mori said he had a nagging feeling you'd be working with?

with your dialogue, chuuya's attention was caught. he turned to you with a relatively neutral expression, perhaps slightly caught off guard that a person he'd never met before knew his name. but by how easy his expressions were to read, you could see him reasoning himself out of suspicion. most likely coming to the conclusion that mori had told you the name of the person you'd be working with.

"that's me." he nodded to you after a brief pause.

the two of you made your way through the building in relative quiet. seeing the executive, most of the mafia grunts noticeably avoided looking directly at you and chuuya. once you were out the front doors, you frowned. none of the cars had anyone in them.

"where's the driver?" you turned to chuuya.

"huh? oh, no i decided i'm driving you. i wanted to talk to you and i don't want anyone listening in." chuuya shrugged, reaching into his pocket for his car keys. "sit in the front."

as instructed, you pulled open the door to the front seat and slid inside. there were a couple more seconds of silence as chuuya started up the car and rolled it into the road.

"is it true that your ability let's you know everything about someone? i'm pretty sure that's basically what akutagawa said..."

"huh? oh haha, no. my ability just uh tells me stuff, sometimes. i can't really control it but sometimes, i guess i just have really good intuition and it just kinda happens... randomly." you chuckled nervously as you lied.

there was another pause as chuuya thought your words over.

"does it tell you anything about me?" he didn't look at you as he spoke.

you froze up a little. you didn't know exactly what to do. maybe it'd be for the best to keep up the lie, really sell it that you truly do have an ability.

"some things. not a lot but... i know about the sheep. i know about verlaine and arahabaki and... stuff." you tilted your gaze out the window, feigning nervousness.

more silence followed.

"...right then."

no more words were spoken throughout the rest of the car ride. not until you arrived at your destination and chuuya slowed the vehicle to a hault.

"we're here." with a click, chuuya unlocked the door. you pushed it open and stepped out, now standing in front of the armed detective agency's building.
