"Turn around, J!" I shout as I turn the other way, I dodge a guard but the blonde runs right into him

"Not much of a hugger man!" he yells to the guard getting a laugh from me as he keeps running

"Oh my god! Go Pope!" I shout as I see him climbing the fence

"Go! Go, go, go, go, go, go!" The blonde yells as Pope falls and I jump the fence quickly. I laugh at Pope as JJ jumps the fence

"Get up, Pope, fatso's coming." JJ says as I help Pope up quickly.

"Bus is leaving!" The brunet honks the horn on the Twinkie

"Pope! It would help if you ran!" I yelled as I ran ahead of him, I quickly jump into the open doors of the Twinkie before JJ

"Come on, boys! Whoo!" The girl yells from next to me

I laugh as I push the door to the van closed after they jump in. I look over to the other open door

"Check out Gary gunnin for a raise!" I laugh

"Come on, Gary!" JJ shouts "Wait. Slow down. Slow down." he tells the brunet in the front

"Hey! You little pricks!" Gary shouts

"You're gonna give him a heart attack." The girl says

"Hey!" JJ hangs out the door of the Twinkie "You're so close! You can do it. There you go." he holds his hand with his beer out as he points at the guard before throwing the beer at him "They don't pay you enough, bro."

Everyone is laughing but the girl "JJ, stop. Stop." she tells him

"Oh, come on. That sort of initiative is just begging to be punished." he laughs

"Whoo!" I clap as I watch Gary stop running "Fatso's out." I lean up and turn the volume on the radio all the way up

The Outer Banks, Paradise on Earth. It's the sort of place where you either have two jobs or two houses. Two tribes, one island.

I watch as we pass a lot full of Yachts and a bunch of mansions

All right. So this is Figure Eight, the rich side if the island. Home of the kooks. So, guess where we don't live.

I watch as we pass the small run down houses

And then this is the South side or the cut. Home of the working class who make a living busing tables, washing yachts, running charters. The natural habitat of..drumroll, please..

We all now lay around in the HMS Pogue before JJ attacks John B

"Get him!" I laugh before we all quickly pile ontop

The Pogues. That's us. Pogues, pogies, the throw away fish.

I watch as JJ sits shirtless and takes a hit of a blunt, he blows the smoke up. He's now in a green hat with sunglasses on.

"Nice necklace." I say as I look at his shark tooth necklace

"Oh, is that what you're looking at?" he smirks as he looks down before flexing. I just scoff and roll my eyes

Lowest member of the food chain. Okay. So, the downside of pogue life is we're ignored and neglected. The upside of pogue life? We're ignored and neglected, which means we do whatever we want, whenever we want.

John B pulls up a fishing net and let's out the fish in the boat "Nice dude!" everyone but Kie praises

"Ugh, John B." she groans

I pick up a fish

"Kiss it. You won't." Kie tells me

"Yea I will." I shrugged and kissed the fish

"Yooo! Y/N's first kiss!" JJ shouts

"I've kissed people before!" I defended myself as I threw the fish down into the boat

__

I look at JJ drive Mr Heyward's boat

That's JJ, my best friend. He was John B's best friend first but I came along freshman year and stole him. He's about as local as they come. Latest in a long line of fishing, drinking, smuggling, vendetta-holding salt-lifers who made their living off the water. It's pretty cool if you ask me. Best surfer I know. Just don't tell him I said that. Mild kleptomaniac (he definitely got that from being around me) and a future tax cheat.

___

John B hugs Kie as she's talking

"Get off of me." then she goes back to talking about plastic

And that's Kiara, or Kie, as we call her. When she's not saving turtles or listening to Marley, or getting a dolphin tattoo, she hangs out with us. I'm not really sure why, though. She's a rich kid, actually. Foot in both worlds. Her family owns the wreck, this outer banks Institution. Total cash cow with the tourists. You know I'm not really sure how her parents feel about us. I guess all the boys sorta have a thing for her. Not to blame them she's kinda hot. I used to like her in freshman year, definitely got my eyes set on someone different now.

___

Pope sits watching as me and JJ dance around and shove eachother

That's Pope, the brains of the operation, finalist for the Lucas T. Vanderhorst Merit Scholarship. We're all kinda stupid. He's the smartest person I know. Little bit of a weirdo. But he'd definitely fuss if I called him that. Alright, so, his father's this legendary character, Heyward. Anything you wanted on the island, Heyward could get it for you. Now, I'm not sure Heyward knew what to make of his oddball son, but it didn't matter. He was a Pogue, just like the rest of us.

_____

I looked at John B as he drove the HMS Pogue, my feet were hanging out the boat and kicking in the water

That's John B, I call him JB for sort even though nobody else does. He knows all my secrets. I ran away from home like forever ago and somehow ended up here in the Outer Banks, when he found out he begged his dad to take me in. Now I live with him. His dad went missing a little while ago, I'm not sure how he's taking it but I know it's not good. Me and JB used to have these nights every week where we would tell eachother secrets that we couldn't tell anyone else, it helped us form a bond. He's like a brother to me. I'd die to protect him and he'd die to protect me. Big John, his dad, it took forever for him to warm up to me, after about a year he finally started treating me like I was his kid. I felt like I had a family again.

That's my crew
___

I rolled my eyes as I walked past the spare room, JJ was on top of some random girl. Probably a toron. He shouted at me as I closed the door

And that's me, Y/N. And this is where I live.

"Morning Kie." I waved to her as he yawned

"Morning."

"Morning JB." I said as I saw him grabbing something in the kitchen and going outside. He just nodded

An old fish shack on the marsh. The Chateau, as Big John used to call it. I already gave you a brief explanation of why I'm here but let's get some details. My dad was an alcoholic, my mom was a druggie, my sister was 15 years older than me, she left me at home when I was 5. My dad hit my mom, she left, so he started hitting me. I got fed up with it when I turned 12, ran away. I somehow ended up all the way here in the Outer Banks coming from Little Rock Arkansas.

And right now it truly is paradise.
