~One~
I should have known this year wouldn't be any different. I should have know the minute we got in the car for the drive there. I should have known when the twins, Kelsey and Brandon, started arguing about one looking out the other's window. I should have known when dad suggested that we all sing folk songs to pass the time. I should have know when we checked our car in and took our bags towards the ferry.
But I didn't. I didn't know until we stepped onto the ferry that would take us to Queen's Island. I had no clue. All of a sudden my mom started squealing excitedly, "Look! They're here! The Stevens are right over there!" I looked to where she was pointed and sure enough there stood the Stephens, all of them except Dylan. I stood thinking about how weird it was when an arm wrapped around my waist and a hand held my mouth shut. I tried squirming and thrashing to get away and get someone's attention, but no one was looking. I almost started to cry I was so scared, then I decided to bite the culprits hand.
"Damn Lace! That hurt!" Of course it was Dylan! I couldn't believe it! "Why'd you bite me?"
"Why'd you pretend to attack me? And don't call me Lace, that nickname's reserved for my friends."
"Since when are we not friends?"
"Since when can you be friends with your bully?"
"Goodness you got feisty. And besides I'm no bully."
"I have twelve years of evidence that says otherwise."
"Look Lace, I'm sorry I scared you, can you forgive me? Please?" He actually looked sorry, sheepishly looking at his shoes. I couldn't say no when he looked so sorry, that would just be cruel.
"Fine. I forgive you. This time, next time I won't forgive you so easily."
"Yay! I'm forgiven!" his frown replaced with a smile. "I missed you."
"You probably just missed messing with me."
"That's not entirely true. But come on, lets hug it out."
"So you can stick something like a frog down the back of my shirt?"
"Hey that was only one time!" he was blushing.
"One time too many."
"If I promise not to try anything can we hug?"
"No."
"No?"
"Yes."
"So are we hugging or not?"
"Not."
"But look at this body," he gestured towards himself. "Who can resist this?"
"This girl," I replied gesturing to me, trying not to let him know that I thought he did look really good. He changed this past year and definitely for the better, he wasn't some scrawny looking teenager anymore, he looked hot. I started to walk away to find my family. "Lace wait up!" I heard him following me.
This was going to be one long summer.
