I heard a faint and distorted voice as I chopped onions in silence. This would have been seen as normal if there were an elderly lady, whispering my name beside me. This would have made more sense to me. But there was none. All I saw at the other side of the room was my mum, chopping red onions with swollen eyes. I was certain something was wrong but couldn't figure out what.
Avaaaa…
The voice had sounded again, this time it caused me to jolt. My stool made a sudden creaking sound, due to my sudden movements. I had the knife I was holding dropped on the wooden chopping board. My eyes had roamed around me in alertness.
My mum was confused by my sudden restlessness, and turned to me in surprise.
"You're fine, Ava?" She asked.
I nodded.
My eyes darted about our mini kitchen. It was a small kitchen but was sufficient enough to accomodate our family of 4. I was not surprised when I had sighted our old family picture pasted on the fridge via a sticker. It was all the doing of my elder brother Ben. How much love he had for our small family. He never stopped boasting about it.
Ava...Please...Stop…
Again, the faint voice came alive in my mind, causing me to tremble. My breathing quickened as I held both ends of my stool, gazing at the emptiness. I sensed something, something odd. This was an entereal situation I couldn't explain.
“You do not look good, Ava '' My mum figured out, finally done with my restlessness.
"I am fine. I have to use the bathroom."
My mum's eyes followed me as I walked out. I was certain it followed me a long way because I never heard her chopping sounds, until I was up the flight of stairs. My mum already suspected something was going on with me, due to my inability to concentrate on anything. I would have shared the issues I had, if my dad wasn't a psychiatrist with lots of connections.
I was certain I wasn't crazy. There was just something creepy about this lady's voice that sounded real.
“Ava, should I call your dad?! " I heard her voice scream from down the stairs. She was still concerned about me.
"No, I am fine." I yelled back at her and shut the door of my bedroom.
Silence overtook me as I sat over the toilet seat, reminiscing what a day that was. I was just chopping freaking onions. What the heck was that voice?
Trying so hard to seek answers for this situation, my face brightened up recalling Ben. Ben found interest in creepy unusual scenarios like that. Maybe his large library of fantasy books would help explain what was wrong.
I washed my hands and raced out of my bathroom.
Ben's white door creaked open revealing his light blue-colored room and neatly kept rug. His room was neatly arranged, showing his kind of lifestyle which contradicted mine.
"Well, he isn't here…" I said to myself with a bit of disappointment. As I turned to leave, I had found a spooky-looking novel with about 200+ pages, glaring its monster pumpkin’s font at me. I wasn't sure what was going on, but it sent shivers down my spine. Shivers I couldn't explain. Reading the title of the novel only made my feelings get worse. I couldn't stop the goosebumps. What novel looked so threatening but intriguing at the same time? I grabbed hold of the novel and read out it's title the second time.
Never Look Back….
