Katie took a second to trace the tattoos that she only got a glimpse of before. "The bathroom is yours." She snapped her eyes forward as she walked past Scarlet.
"Cool." Scarlet rolled her neck and pulled a small ziplock bag from her pack. She got up and went over to the bathroom.
Once the door closed, Katie let out a breath. "Why does she have to be hot?" She fell back on the bed and sighed at the kinda lumpy but soft mattress.
The peaceful silence was broken by a car screeching down the street and horns blaring.
"Fucking thin walls..." Katie sat up and looked over at the small sleeping arrangement that was tucked into the corner that diagonal to the door.
One of the blankets was folded to make a makeshift sleeping mat and the pillows were arranged at the angle of the corner.
"Guess it'll do..."
The bathroom door opened and Scarlet stepped out and closed the door quietly. She stood awkwardly for a moment, "So is it right to bed or...?"
"Or what? This isn't a sleepover."
"Not with that attitude it's not."
Katie couldn't hold back the small smile at that appeared on her face. "We have to get up early, so bed."
"I made you smile so I obviously have some form of a point." Scarlet walked over to the sleep corner.
Katie had to hold back the reflex to grab a pillow and throw it at her. "Bed now."
Scarlet raised her hands in defeat, "Yes ma'am."
Katie watched as Scarlet laid down and pressed her back to wall, so she was facing the room.
"Are you sure you're good down there?" Katie stood up and walked over to the light switch.
"We are not having this argument, goodnight Katie."
"Okay." With no room for argument Katie turned off the light and shuffled back to the bed before getting under the covers.
Scarlet was sitting on her knees on her bed and her arms were crossed on her windowsill. It wasn't much of a view, it looked out to a brick wall of another building but it was the time of day when the sun perfectly shined through the cracks of buildings and into her bedroom.
And Scarlet was gonna savor every moment of it.
There was muffled sounds from above her, her upstairs neighbors were always loud.
Scarlet frowned as the sunlight got blocked by a cloud. The room became dark, a feeling of dread started to crawl across her skin. The apartment door slammed shut and her heart leaped into her throat.
Thinking quickly she climbed off her bed and slid underneath it. She crawled to all the way to the wall and faced it and tried to slow her breath.
"Scarlet!" Her father called, his voice gruff and tired. "I got a call from school today..."
Scarlet could feel the footsteps approach her bedroom. They echoed her heartbeat as the door opened with a squeak.
"You got in a fight again..." His voice got angrier as he stomped around her room. "I thought I raised my daughter better then that." He pulled open the closest door. He sighed in disappointment.
Scarlet held her breath as the footsteps stopped.
"Do I need to teach you a lesson?" He went quiet.
Scarlet counted the quiet seconds before she felt a large hand grab her leg and drag her out form under the bed. She screamed but she was never loud enough for the neighbors to hear.
Scarlet took in a quick breath as her eyes shot open. Her heartbeat was in her ears and her face was wet.
"Shit..." Scarlet sat up from her sleeping mat. She touched her face and was meet with hot tears.
She quietly got up and slowly made her way to the bathroom. She closed the door before turning on the light.
Yup. Her eyes were bloodshot and twin streams of tears ran down her face.
"You're fine...you're not there...not anymore." Scarlet turned on the faucet and began wiping her face with cool water.
When she looked in the mirror again, her face was raw but the tears stopped. She took several deep breaths and turned off the light.
She opened the door and saw a shadowy shape in the darkness of the motel room.
"Scarlet..." Katie asked from the bed.
"Sorry, didn't mean to wake you..." Scarlet tried to fight the shakiness in her voice.
"Are you okay?" Concern filled her voice.
"Yup, totally fine." Scarlet fought the small voice in her head begging her say the opposite.
Katie didn't believe a single word. "Scarlet..."
"Yes?" She froze as she returned to her sleeping area.
"Come sleep on the bed..." Katie patted the empty side. "It'll help you sleep better."
"Katie, I'm-"
"Scarlet." Katie's tone sharpened.
Scarlet kneeled down and grabbed the blanket she was using. "Yes ma'am." She walked over to the bed and laid on top of the covers and through the blanket over herself.
"Your back will thank me in the morning." Katie softly teased. "Goodnight Scarlet."
"Goodnight."
Scarlet woke up first, surprisingly. She rubbed her eyes and looked over at the digital clock on the nightstand. 6:25, five minutes before the alarm was gonna go off.
When flopped back down on the pillows and looked over to her right.
Oh.
Right.
Katie's still sleeping peaceful form was facing Scarlet. The early rising sun shined through the window and cascaded across her pale skin.
They were closer then what they fell asleep as but Scarlet was more interested in counting the freckles on Katie's cheeks. Katie's brown curls looked soft and a part of her bangs fell in front of her eyes.
Scarlet reached out without much thought and Katie's hazel eyes fluttered opened as the alarm went off. Scarlet immediately dropped her hand. "Good morning."
