Hazel and Isaac gave a pre funeral speech for Augustus over his request. For the next few days, Isaac and Hazel stayed very close to Augustus. They feared Augustus would leave them at any moment.
One night, Augustus was admitted in the hospital as he had internal bleeding and he suffered to breath. Hazel and Augustus's family waited outside the ICU along with Isaac. They believed that it would be the last night to see Augustus alive.
The doctor stepped outside and informed them to visit Augustus as he would be no more. He informed Augustus' father that a new doctor had visited the hospital and he has come with some specialized treatments and medicines. The doctor said that there is a possibility to see Augustus alive if the doctor takes a look on Augustus, but he cannot make any promises. Augustus' father requested the doctor to pay a visit to him. Meanwhile, inside the ICU, Hazel and Augustus were sobbing looking each other.
"I hope you deliver the same funeral speech, okay?" Augustus smiled with his regular kissable lips. Hazel burst out crying and said, "okay"
"Okay" Augustus believed her promise.
The next morning, the new doctor examined Augustus and assured that he could still be alive for the next few months. The doctor gave few medicines and few treatments. One day, Augustus walked to Hazel and informed her that he has a poem to deliver. And he wrote the poem with the help of Peter Van Houten. Augustus delivered the poem to Hazel, for which her tears responded. They knew that they would die one day for sure. But the mystery was about who would leave the other first. They carried on their love with their simple 'okay'. The novel ends with Augustus Waters and Hazel Grace sitting in the garden and Augustus reading the poem to her:
The distinctive exclusive soul
Who admires even the ground
The one who hates to bother the earth.
You know what's real and true
That's why I have fallen for you
I guess.
We leave a scar when we move
I'm worried that I will be there
To witness your scar
I want you to remember my mark.
You will leave a very slighter one
You don't want anyone to remember you
Except the shining stars in your room.
I wish I had few more years
To love you more
I wish I had few more years
To love you more deep
I wish I had few more years
To spend more blissful days and night.
Your painted nails and warm fingers
Were same even in the ICU,
Maybe the ICU loved you more than me.
We'll not survive for hindered years
But I'm satisfied to die
As I have experienced the best set of memories
With you Hazel Grace.
We do have a choice
But sometimes we don't opt those.
I like my choices
I hope you like yours.
I do, Hazel Grace
Okay?
