You didn't hate the girl. It wasn't her fault that Lo'ak liked her, and you wouldn't be mean to her. You didn't know her well but she kind of reminded you of Neteyam. Being the oldest sibling, keeping her siblings in line, responsible, helpful, and kind.
"Yes, let's head to the shallower water. We will teach you how to ride an ilu."
What the heck is an llu
...
While you struggled a bit to ride an ilu, you weren't as bad as Lo'ak and Neteyam. You smiled when you noticed Tuk excelling on a smaller one, giggling as it swam softly with her.
Soon enough, you were all riding your ilu's in the water. It was fun since you, Sullys, couldn't swim as fast as the three Metkayina children. You looked up and smiled as Neteyam circled around you on his ilu. It was cute. Your smile fell when you noticed Tsireya and Lo'ak flirting. He bumped her ilu trying to knock her off and she was grinning.
...
You had all just gotten out of the water. You were placing the ilus saddles where Ao'nung told you to. Your saddled slipped off, and before you could reach to grab Ao'nung picked it up for you.
"You forest people can't do anything right" he rolled his eyes
You burned with anger, and right before you opened your mouth to say something, you felt a hand touch yours.
"It's not worth it." Neteyam looked down at you.
"What. I'm supposed to let him talk to me like that." you knew you shouldn't take your anger out on him, but you were already worked up with Lo'ak and Tsireya.
"Of course not but, the next time he disrespects you, he will wish he never opened his mouth."
The low and dangerous tone Neteyam spoke in made you shiver.
You swallowed and stared up at him. His eyes never left yours.
"W-well, I appreciate that, but I can handle it myself. You don't need to get yourself in trouble because of me." you tried to hide how thrown off by you were by his words but he saw through you.
He smirked, "fine, whenever you need backup, though. All you have to do is call." You smiled and followed behind him back to the hut.
...
It had been almost two weeks since you had arrived at the Metkayina Clan. You were all learning quickly but still had a long way to go. Lo'ak had barely even spoken to you since you all arrived, and after the third day of being ignored, you decided to ignore him back.
You and Neteyam had been hanging out almost the entire time. Swimming with each other, exploring the clan and riding your ilu's together. You always knew Neteyam well but this was completely different. He was always sweet to you but it felt like something in the past two weeks had shifted between you two. You started getting closer to each other, inside jokes started to form, he felt more comfortable touching you, and so did you.
Especially when after dinner one night Tuk ran by you almost causing you to fall in the water. Neteyam caught you and pulled you flush against his body, grabbing you at the waist and wrist. You saw his cheeks light on fire against his blue skin and a small smile appear.
"Got ya" he was so close to your face, noses almost touching.
You backed away just a little bit, "uh, yea thank you. Good save" you both stood there both not wanting to let each other go.
"Are you guys glued together now or?"
Kiri's voice startled the both of you. Causing you to jump back toward the water, Neteyam grabbed for you, but it was too late. And lucky for him, he was going down with you. You both surfaced from the water. Sputtering for air. Then looked at each other and started laughing.
Lo'ak had witnessed the whole thing with Kiri, and while she was smiling and laughing along with you and Neteyam. He was straight-faced.
"Stop fooling around." he bent down and offered you his hand. You stared at it and gave him a look. "Oh so you're the only one allowed to fool around?"
"Last time I checked it was usually me and you fooling around," giving you the same attitude.
"Don't you have Tsireya for that now?" you scoffed.
You shook your head and swam toward the lower part of the path to pull yourself up on your own. Lo'ak quickly pulled his hand away and walked toward the hut, embarrassed. Neteyam smirked and followed behind you.
Kiri stood there, eyes wide. A mischievous smile graced her face. It looked like this was going to get interesting.
...
All the kids except for Tuk were sitting on the rock. It was warm, and the sun was shining beautifully. It was an excellent spot to rest after diving for so long.
"I don't get it,how can you guys stay under for so long without air." Lo'ak spoke. He was sitting in the middle of Tsireya and Ao'nung.
"It's all about the breathing, everyone sit up, please," she had us make a circle, you in the middle of Neteyam and Ao'nung. Right across from Kiri.
"Everyone breathe in and out," you deeply breathed in trying to get as much air in your lungs.
"No," you hear Tsireha say; she places a hand on Lo'ak's chest and stomach, "breath from here" patting the hand on his stomach.
Your eyebrows shot up, and you shoot a look at Kiri. Before seeing her response, you felt a pair of hands touch your chest and stomach. You tensed. You looked at Ao'nung.
"Breathe," he said, and you did.
The moment Ao'nung touched you, Neteyam almost threw him into the water. It took every bit of restraint he had in his body to stay completely still.
Lo'ak turned his head when he noticed Ao'nung with his hands on you. He also caught a glance at Neteyam and he was taken aback by the possessive look on Neteyam's face, his eyes trained on hands that were touching your body.
"Lo'ak, your heart is beating faster." Tsireya spoke. You looked back at Lo'ak and Tsireya no longer distracted by Ao'nung.
"Sorry" Lo'ak was looking at Tsireya, you had to look away. He was looking at her with such a soft gaze.
"Y/n?" Ao'nung questioned, "are you going to breathe?"
You breathed out harshly; you didn't even know you were holding your breath.
"Uh yea, sorry." You followed Tsireya's instructions and you felt it start to work. How neat.
After a couple of minutes of breathing, Neteyam had enough of this. Especially with the fact that Ao'nung was still touching you. He didn't trust himself to sit and watch any longer.
"I'm hungry. Can we go?" he spoke
Kiri and Rotxo shared a knowing look,Neteyam wasn't hungry, he just needed an excuse for Ao'nung to get his hands off you.
"Great idea Neteyam. Me too" you stood up immediately and jumped into the water, not wasting any time Neteyam followed right behind you.
Lo'ak watched you swim with Neteyam. You were smiling at him and splashing him. Not long ago, you would have looked back and asked Lo'ak if he was coming. You probably would have waited for him. Now you were looking at Neteyam as if he was the one you were best friends with.Since when were you and Neteyam so close?
Now that he thinks about it, you and him hadn't really spoken since arriving at the Metkayina Clan. Jealousy hit him like a wave crashing against the shore.
