chapter 4 | lights out and away we go

Start from the beginning

"So they hate each other?" Obviously, the drama didn't make things interesting per se but people loved being nosy and knowing things they probably shouldn't know. Although Cassandra doubted this whole teammates-to-enemies thing was a secret for anyone.

"I mean hate is a strong word, I'd say maybe they just don't like each other. Sometimes." Gareth shrugged. "But really who knows? Those guys are very competitive, and Sebastian does have a reputation of being maybe too entitled I guess. The guy's really good at what he does, so it's justifiable in my opinion. The best of all always comes with an attitude." He smiled. "I'm just saying what I've seen though. And like, Seb is younger than him and maybe a bit too competitive. I guess those kinds of issues were bound to happen." Gareth looked at her. "It's like you and Jan, for example. Competitive work environment."

Her face twisted in disgust at the mere mention of the guy. "Jan is a complete asshole." Her complaints weren't foreign to Gareth. Back when they worked together, Cassandra made sure to narrate in detail every single thing that happened between her and Jan. Gareth of course always took her side, but that didn't mean a lot considering he couldn't do anything.

He did know the kind of person Cassandra was though. It was a very toxic situation. "And you're an angel, right?" Okay, she knew what he meant by that.

But still, Jan was always worse than her. Wait. Did that mean she was Sebastian if Jan was Mark? Or the other way around? The jokes weren't even funny.

"Isn't that normal among them though? Right, Gaz? I've read it always happens with different teams and things like that. And they say women are the emotional ones." Abigail chimed in the conversation.

Gareth drifted his attention from Cassandra to her. "Yeah, it's not something unusual. The problem is sometimes it gets nasty, so I guess that's when it becomes a big deal for them. Especially if it affects the team. Who knows how they manage all of that." He gave a little shrug as if dismissing the topic.

It worked as the whole frenemies-to-teammates or teammates-to-frenemies chat died down, all three pairs of eyes were more focused on the TV screen. Cassandra wasn't one to never enjoy the dramatics and gossip about them, but she found herself wishing for the race to start so they could get it over with. She was already expecting a two-hour snoozefest, but it was more her general opinion about sports.

Truth be told, it wasn't as she imagined it would be. She even allowed slipped a chuckle when a driver said something idiotic over the radio.

Her gaze was glued to the car leading the race though, and she found herself feeling a bit annoyed when the camera crew cut to focus on another driver. Cassandra just dismissed that feeling by convincing herself that everybody always wanted to see the winners, the front rows, nobody really liked to see a loser messing up what they were doing. Plus the whole point of it was fast cars, the fastest car of them all deserved the attention. It just happened to be Sebastian's.

Cassandra wondered what went through their heads while they were driving. She wondered what Sebastian thought while he drove the car. She blinked twice, then realised how much she was thinking about him.

"He's good." She mentioned it suddenly and casually. The need to let something out to perhaps distract herself. And maybe find out if Abigail and Gareth were thinking about Sebastian as much as she was.

Gareth looked at her, his lips pursing. "He's really good." Cassandra sighed at the remark.

They kept quiet after that, just staring at the screen and Sebastian leading the race. Cassandra flinched when two drivers made contact and was subjected to Gareth's whole explanation about what a safety car was and why there was one in the race. She was pretty sure she had read about it somewhere. Sebastian kept leading the race though. Not that she cared. Anyway.
