Things are slow today. You haven't seen a customer walk through your door in hours, and you're wondering why on earth your nana is making you work this late. With a sigh, you stare out of the window. The rain is pouring like you've never seen, and at this point you're wondering if it's gonna turn into a storm.
There isn't a single soul outside today, you'd imagine that they're all inside, enjoying the rain from the comfort of their beds. The thought draws a grumble out of you, you really wish you could be in bed right now.
Suddenly your nana's voice interrupts your thoughts.
"(Y/N) are you alright, dear? What have you been looking at?" She calls. A part of you wants to ask her why in the world she's keeping you here so long, but you wouldn't dare disrespect your lovely nana, would you?
Instead you perish the thought, and offer to help her bake another batch of bread.
"It's nothing nana, I'm just a little spacey today is all. Is there anything you need my help with?" You say, offering her a kind smile. She means the world to you.
"Well if you would...I really need another few loafs of bread baked, we're running low." You knew it. Wearily you eye the stack of fallen loafs that litter the trash can.
You notice that they're sunken. Most of them sport giant depressions in their centers, others don't seem to have risen yet. You sigh. Things like this are sad to see, your nana has been forgetting things lately. At first, you didn't think that it was anything serious. She was only forgetting things like her keys, and her phone.
But then things began to escalate. All of a sudden she was forgetting how to turn on her car, and she was getting worse with directions. But now this? Your heart hurts at the sight. Your nana has baked with you since you were a child, there wasn't any way she could screw up baking unless she was forgetting about that too.
You feign your smile still though, you don't want her to feel guilty for needing your help with things.
"Of course nana. I'll be right there." She smiles back at you. Her smile is warm and knowing. For a second, you think she might notice that you pity her. You think she's trying to cheer you up.
"I love you honey." She pulls you into a crushing embrace. You return it, careful not to hug her too hard. And then you wander off into the kitchen.
You grab an apron from the rack in the corner and fasten it around your waist, making sure it's tight. You'd die if you got flour on your outfit.
You then recall the loafs of bread in the trash can. It was obvious what was wrong with them, well to you at least. With a grimace, you reach into the cupboard and pull it out. The 10 pound bag of yeast that has tormented you for months.
You don't even need to check the expiration date. You already know full well that it's dead. Letting out a hearty sigh you slam-dunk it directly into the garbage. God you've wanted to do that for so long.
And with that you get started. Flour milk eggs...all the works. Then you've got yourself a lump of dough. You roll it up into something of a long cylindrical form and cut it into fifths which you throw into several bowls to rise.
And then you cover them and leave them be, dusting your hands off proudly afterwards. You return to your nana who's seated at one of your tables. She's got her eyes trained on a crossword puzzle and she's slaying the hell out of it.
You don't want to interrupt her but...she notices you first.
"Did you finish making the dough?" She asks you, her eyes remain on her puzzle.
"Yeah, they're in the fridge rising." You shrug. She smiles.
"Do you wanna leave? Today's really slow..." she says. You don't want to leave her but...you're just so tired. Your legs feel like they'll cave in at any moment.
