Chapter 14: A Foolish Little Star

"!" Kokabiel's teeth started to bleed as he grinded them together hard, struggling to let the girl kill this person.

He didn't want to believe what she said, but what if it was true? Then his whole plan will be jeopardized too early. Doubts started to overcome his mind second by second.

"Her act is either perfect, or she is confident she is safe." This means what she says is true — even if partly. Honestly, even he, a practiced liar, can't say for sure.

"Besides, I want the pleasure of her torture for myself." He wanted to rape her, torture her, and kill this little whore by himself! But above all, he wanted to teach her how to treat her better! To beg for a release like a beaten dog before she expires!

Yet, if the slight chance stands, she tells the truth. He can't risk it! Not so close to his goal!

It was odd, but some inner urge made him reluctant to attack her right here and now.

"Nice try! I admit this weapon fits you better than that sword." Tilting her head and her body, Gillian inspected the weapon without fear.

"How can I be sure you will not betray us? If what you say is true, and you really know Azazel and the Maou."

"I give you my word. Have a little faith...!" Placing her hand on her heart, Gillian bowed mockingly. "I will not say a word about your little visit. In exchange, I want your silence too. We will both follow the rules. That's how our game goes. Whichever side violates first will be punished in the coming ages! ~"

"Hmm... I don't think I can trust you. What if you just notify them about me right after we leave? Why shouldn't we just simply kidnap you?"

"Remember? Chip! I can also trigger a warning manually — which will broadcast my position and data to my contractors — even to other dimensions. I am kinda valuable to them, you know?"

"Tch! You have an answer to everything, don't you?" Her pedantry really started to tick both Kokabiel and Mertinia.

"Nah... Little Lady, I doubt even God is omniscient. That would be illogical. However, I am prepared as much as I can be. My area of expertise comes with many dangers. The least I can do is to prepare." Gillian sighed, scratching her neck then cracking her fingers.

"And you are right. Trusting others is kinda foolish. So, I don't ask anyone to trust me. Neither have I really trusted anyone — ever. But listen to me. In this case, both of our interests are to not speak about the other side. For me, because if I do, you reveal my connections and our little meeting here — which means I will be forced to knot loose ties and change position, which is a hassle. And for you, because if you do so, Azazel, the Maou, and a few others will be notified of your activity, and with it, your precious "evil plan" will be thrown into the garbage. Logical, isn't it? So! Would you kindly not speak about our involvement?"

"Hmm..." Kokabiel eyed the girl suspiciously. He had never seen her before. Yet, his instinct told him she was telling the truth. The most logical step is to not speak about each other. Yes! That was the only logical step the voice in his mind dictated! A voice he can trust!

"If I may ask, how do you know them?" His hostile intent and rage lessened but still lingered under his curiosity.

"Oh! That? You know, information and rarities are my business. I would be a really poor broker if anyone other than my partners knows about me." Gillian lied through her teeth. Though, part of this was true — everyone knows, a good lie based on some truth.

"Tell the truth if you can... but change a crucial detail which would inevitably betray your secret." That's how good lies are born.

"That's... true. Then why do you betray them now? If you are allied with them, it is probably in your interest to tell them about us." Kokabiel can't help but be curious. She must have a reason!
