Chapter 13: Pearls Before Swines

Start from the beginning

"Probably..." Vali sighed, shaking his head. It seems, being sealed inside the Sacred Gear is starting to affect Albion's mind. Nonetheless, he will take his advice to heart. Let's investigate who she is first before challenging her. A little precaution never hurts.

"Someone who can just teleport inside and outside the closed section of the Fallen archives must have considerable skills." Someone, he better keep an eye on.

"If I die here, I can't challenge those two!"

"...allo... aro you there?" 'Bonk'

"Auch! What's that for?" Vali grabbed his head in pain, feeling a throbbing feeling in the place where Gillian bonked him with the spine of the book — bringing him back from his inner monologue.

"You phased out..." She deadpanned. "I brought you back."

"You could have simply called out. Damn, that hurt!" Just how hard did she hit his head? Usually, he can't even perceive simple strikes.

"Whatever..." Gillian shook her head and sighed. "If you have nothing else to say, I will return to my studies. There is much information I need to absorb. If you want to help, go and find any Sacred Sword or holy-energy-related volumes. That's my topic for today's study. Scream if you find anything interesting, and Mittelt-chan will fetch it."

At this point, Mittelt just mumbled indignantly, being used as a simple courier.

"Hmm... Who are you anyway?" Just what does this girl think of herself ordering him around? And she didn't even introduce herself.

Vali can't help but lose his composure for a moment.

Was he treated like an errand boy? He? The descendant of the original Lucifer? Is his name not enough to make her know who he is?

"Call me Gillian. A simple nobody high school student — Part-time working in my own café. If you don't want to help, please, remain silent. It is a library..." She didn't even spare him a look. Her eyes just scanned the pages one after another, flipping them under a second.

'Flip!'

"Tch!" Of course, Vali didn't believe what she said. But he remained silent for the time being, watching her as she continued to "read."

"Should I attack her? But what Albion said..." Usually, he goes after his own guts. Accepting Albion's advice, but he is the one who makes the final decision.

"However, this time..." He was unsure what to do.

His pride as the descendant of the original Lucifer said to take revenge after the offense. Teach her who her better is! On the other end, he was wary... instinctively he rather avoided fighting with her.

"Dammit..." Vali clicked his tongue, annoyed.

Her short answer and dismissing attitude just made him even more curious and confused. If he can't get a straight answer from her, then he will remain and get more info by watching her.

'Flip, flip, flip...'

"She is just skimming it... switching pages constantly! What the hell!? Is she even reading that book or just playing around? Even with specialized magic glasses, people can't read that fast."

Or rather, they usually can't read and understand things at once.

"Those volumes are ancient! Written in a dead dialect and language which no one has been able to read for a millennia or more." Or, better said, very few are able to do so.

"Is that a magic item on her eyes?"

Yes, that might be the case. It was either a translator item, a device that helped her read faster — or both.
