The architect (Arthur) x reader
Tw: angst, implied character death
Y/n. Their name was Y/n. Academically they were at the top of every class they had ever attended. That included the interdimensional classroom that was run by their teacher "The Architect". The class covered the origins and connections of the three worlds that influenced their reality the most. They had listened and retained every word Arthur had ever spoken and yet it wasn't enough for them. They began staying behind in the temporal rift that was his library. They began reading about glyph magic. Even doing magic on their own. Arthur observed them as they did so. Never interfering. Just watching patiently. Waiting for them to crash and drop the silly crusade they had started. But they didn't. they continued with fervent interest, staying in his library for days and days to absorb more and more knowledge. He had once been the same, so intensely thirsty for knowledge that he had completely dismissed his needs and health, both mental and physical. After a particularly long stretch of their obsessive study hauls and after he watched them down their 5th red bull. He stepped out to aid them.

"I believe its time I sent you home Y/n."

Arthur said softly as he closed the book in their lap.

"Just a bit longer Professor. I'm nearly done with this chapter"

They said trying desperately to retrieve the book from Arthur's hands, but he held it above his head and in a flash of blue light it was gone and back in its place in the library.

"It isn't up for discussion Y/n. Your exhausted. You haven't eaten in days. Go home, and I'll see you in class on Wednesday."

And with that he gently nudged them towards a portal that he had opened not even moments ago.

"Professor please, there's so much more I need to learn!"

Arthur cringed at how similar they seemed to him in his past life.

"I won't hear it. Go home."

Y/n's shoulders slumped, and they shrugged themselves through the portal back into their bedroom.

That Wednesday, Arthur didn't see Y/n in their usual seat in class. In fact, they weren't there at all. Concern filled his lungs and flooded into his stomach as he taught his class. When it let out and every student had left, he sought out their usual study spot in his library. Sure enough, a still cold, half drank red bull sat on the oak table and their notes sat strewn across the hardwood. He inspected the notes curious as to what kept his most diligent student from going to class. He blanched and nearly threw up as he began to recognize the symbols incantations and notes. Blood magic, the ritual. In slightly worsening handwriting his student had copied the ritual that had killed him. The fear rose in his throat in the form of the salty, bitter taste of bile as he backed away from the table.

"Professor?"

A voice behind him asked.

Arthur swiftly turned to see Y/n. The bags under their eyes aged them and, in their arms, they held the book. The one unfinished book in his library. The very last book he had written in his human lifetime. The book that cost him everything.

"Y/n. What do you think you're doing?"

He asked sternly, his lips quivering.

"I'm studying! I never thought I could find such enlightening knowledge here! And yes of course your books are helpful, but I need more than just pages and ink, I need more. So, I'm performing your ritual! So, I can be like you!"

Y/n explained with a growing smile. Arthur paled and almost began to cry. They didn't know, and yet they did completely.

"You don't want to be me, Y/n. I'm not even human anymore."

"But that's the point! Humanity is a roadblock! I will do anything to know everything! If this is what it takes, I'll do it."

They said as they looked down at the aged book in their hands. Arthur raised their head to face him, gripping them tightly under their chin.

"Do you have what it takes? Are you willing to give up EVERYTHING for the sake of knowledge?"

He asked glaring into their eyes, sincerity wavering in his voice. Their lips quivered and their hands shook. But they glared back.

"I have what it takes Professor"

Oh no. he's seen that look before, the utter determination despite the dangers. It was his own face last he saw it. And yet, here he stood trying to bargain with his student. Trying to remind them he was barely a man anymore and despite it all, the fire in their eyes raged and he knew it was too late. With a futile attempt he asked them

"Do you think the knowledge is worth it?"

Y/n looked up at him, almost confused.

"You thought it was, didn't you?"

His heart sunk, and breath stopped. He dropped his hand and just stood there. Defeated. Y/n stepped back, and then stepped around him and jogged down the hall. Jogging to the last place Arthur ever saw them. Leaving the Architect alone in his library.... had it always felt this lonely?
