The sharp trill of my alarm pulled me out of sleep. I groaned, fumbling to silence it, then stared at the ceiling for a moment. The first day of senior year. It was supposed to be exciting, right? New beginnings, last memories, all of that. But to me, it just felt like walking back into another performance. Another year of being Olivia Cooper—the perfect daughter, the flawless cheer captain, and the girl everyone wanted to be friends with.
I rolled out of bed and shuffled to my closet. My cheerleading uniform hung front and center, bright red with white stripes and our school's emblem stitched on the chest. It practically screamed school spirit. Every year, the cheerleaders wore our uniforms on the first day, a way to remind everyone who we were before the season even began.
I pulled it on, smoothing the fabric over my body, and tied my hair into a high ponytail. My reflection stared back at me: confident, polished, perfect. No one would guess how fake it all felt sometimes.
"Miss Olivia, breakfast is ready!" Maria called from downstairs.
"Coming!" I grabbed my phone and bag before heading down. The smell of fresh coffee and toast filled the kitchen as I slid into a chair at the table.
"Your father already left for work," Maria said as she placed a plate in front of me. "He wanted me to remind you to 'make him proud.'" She gave a small smile, but I could see the worry behind it. Maria knew more about my life than anyone outside my family, though even she didn't know the full truth.
"Of course," I said, forcing a smile. Dad always said the same thing. Make him proud. Behave. Don't ask questions. The "rich businessman" facade he'd built was so carefully crafted that even I sometimes forgot it wasn't real. But the reminders were everywhere—security cameras hidden around the house, bodyguards on standby, and the late-night meetings he thought I didn't notice.
I finished my breakfast quickly and headed outside to where Miguel, our driver, waited. "Morning, Miguel," I said as I slid into the car.
"Good morning, Miss Olivia. Ready for the first day?"
"Ready as I'll ever be," I muttered, looking out the window as the car pulled out of our driveway.
The school parking lot was already buzzing when we arrived. Students spilled out of cars, catching up after the summer, laughing and showing off their new outfits. It was loud and chaotic, but in a way that felt familiar.
Mia and Sophia were waiting by the entrance, both in their matching cheer uniforms. Mia spotted me first and waved excitedly. "Olivia!"
"There she is," Sophia said with a smirk as I walked up to them. "You're late."
"Barely," I said, grinning.
Mia pulled me into a hug. "Senior year! Can you believe it?"
"Not really," I admitted. "Feels like we were just freshmen yesterday."
"And now we're queens of the school," Sophia said, tossing her hair over her shoulder.
We headed inside together, navigating the crowded hallways. Everyone seemed excited, but I felt... off. My dad's words from the night before kept echoing in my head: "This year is going to be different, Olivia. There's a deal in the works, and I need you to be prepared." He hadn't explained what he meant, but the serious tone in his voice had sent a chill down my spine.
By the time lunch rolled around, the day felt almost normal. Mia and Sophia kept me distracted with gossip about who got what car for their birthday, who broke up over the summer, and who was already planning their prom dress.
"Did you hear about the party this weekend?" Mia asked, leaning across the table.
Sophia nodded. "Everyone's going to be there. It's supposed to be huge, and I heard there'll even be some people from outside of town."
I raised an eyebrow. "Like who?"
"Not sure," Mia said. "Some people connected to families my dad does business with. They're older, probably hot, and definitely rich."
Sophia smirked. "Maybe Olivia will finally meet someone who can keep up with her."
"Doubtful," I said with a laugh, though my mind wandered back to my dad's mysterious words. This "deal" he kept mentioning...
