[ One Day Left - Present Day]
"I have something to tell you."

Sunny remembered the silence that filled the room that day. Crushing, cold, devastating silence. His body felt so heavy, so stiff, but nothing seemed to hurt anymore. His wounds that once throbbed while he carried himself towards Basil's hospital room now lay dormant before his friends.
"You..what?" Sunny wasn't sure who had spoken first. All of his friends voices seemed miles away in that moment. Though, when he recalled the memory he was sure it was Hero's.
"Don't make him say it again." Aubrey's voice surprised him. Sunny half expected her to outright kill him by the way her horrified expression morphed into one of unbridled rage.
"That's not a funny joke, Sunny. You're joking, right? This is all just.." Kel and his goddamn everlasting optimism. How could he believe his own friend was innocent even after the boy had spelled it out for him? If Sunny wasn't serious about every word he spoke, Kel's denial would be refreshing; but all it made him right then was nauseous.
"He's not lying you-" Aubrey's voice hitched in the back of her throat, stopping her sentence. "He fucking killed her, you shit. He murdered Mari he-"
Sunny could barely react before a flash of bright pink hair whisked by him and towards the trash can at the entrance. There was a brief pause before the room filled with the stench of vomit and the sound of retching. Sunny closed his good eye, willing himself not to join her.
"But...you and Basil really.." " Kel had finally caught on by the sound of defeat laced within his words. It took all Sunny had to open his eye again. By then, Aubrey had stopped puking, and the boy could hear her soft sobs behind him.
'Is this all you thought it would be?' He could hear his doubt taking form, snaking back into his thoughts. 'Was telling your friends the truth really worth all of this?'
"I think it might be best if you leave, Sunny." Hero startled him. The older boy had been quiet for so long that Sunny had almost forgotten he was there. "That was a lot you put on us for one day. I think it would be best if you..."
There was a crack in his words as Hero let the sentence drop. But Sunny didn't need to hear anymore to know exactly what he meant. No one wanted him there. Not even Kel, who looked dazed as he stared intently at the floor below them; eyes glassy, and hands trembling ever so slightly.
"Please just go."

Mari was waiting for him on the balcony when he returned to his hospital room. Her soft smile hung loosely around her lips, and her hair seemed extra matted today. Though, maybe he was just imagining things. Her hair had always been snarled where she had hit it falling down the stairs. That had never changed even from the moment she had showed up, transparent and hovering slightly, in his room that night.
"I'm proud of you, you know." Her words stung, even if she meant well. "I know that wasn't easy for you to tell them.
Sunny's eyes flickered towards his dead older sisters bruised neck before he answered.
"I didn't want to." His voice was strained. "I didn't want to hurt them like that."
There was a pause before his older sister spoke again.
"It was still very brave of you, Sunny." She began. "And now that they know, things will be a little better. For all of us." Mari's gentle gaze shifted down towards her little brother; and this time he looked up to meet it. "Don't you think?"
It silent for a moment as the two of them gazed upon the small town they had grown up in. Cars buzzed around beneath them, so small from so high up. After his stay at the hospital, this was it. Soon this town and all of its people would be far behind him. His whole childhood, all of his fondest memories. And so would Mari.
"I love you."
"I love you too, Sunny."
