When I became conscious once again I was aware of dust in the air that I was breathing, clogging up my throat. I coughed and looked up. Through the cloudy haze I could just see the moon's face looking down on me. The moon??
I sat up. The tiny hut had been obliviated into splintered wood and crumbled plaster.
"Hello?" I cried. No answer. I slipped around in the mud. I couldn't see the boy anywhere. Where was he?
I waded through the wreckage, pushing the wood and the broken furniture aside until I found him. He lay crumpled and broken on the floor; breathing but not moving.
I kneeled beside him and shook him gently. He did not wake. I surveyed the ruins of the hut. Out here we were vunerable and were in grave danger. The vampires would surely be coming...
