Prologue

Chyna Daniels

"Look who decided to come into work ta'day. Bout time nigga."

"Sorry. Late night." I slowly sipped on my coffee.

"Another failed date huh? I know that look on your face."

"I don't even wanna' talk about it. Just know I won't be going out with anyone else you set me up with."

"What you mean? Y'all seemed to hit it off real well at the party two nights ago."

"Because we were in front of you. That's why. Apparently I'm too ghetto and hood for him. He's a doctor, and I don't quite fit the description of what he's looking for."

"But didn't you and Hakiem just get back ta'getha?!"

"Yeah. Last night."

"Before or after the date?"

"After." I slightly rolled my eyes. "You know we had to argue about the whole date thing before we officially got back together."

Catching the side eye my friend threw at me, I slowly started to unpack my bag.

"I know Hakiem the only nigga you familiar with, but that don't mean you gotta' keep running back ta' him every time a date don't go as planned."

"It's more than that. Stay out my business."

"Yo' business is my business." He shrugged. "It's like watching a real life Lifetime movie."

Feeling a smile tug at my lips, I slowly shook my head.

"I hate you with everything in me."

"I love you too." He smiled. "But if you late again, I'm gone take yo client. Cause' you know he pay good."

"I wish you would." I smirked. "You don't have ta' worry about me being late again. I'm back with Hakiem."

"Yeah right." He chuckled sarcastically. "You really about ta' be late."

Waving him off, I finished setting up the rest of my station before seating my client.

"Chyna, you know you too beautiful ta' just let these niggas keep treating you like this right?"

Biting the edge of my lip, I nodded my head before turning the clippers on.

"Yeah." I mumbled. "But I'm with Hakiem now, soo..."

"You'll get it one day." He chuckled.

Glancing out of the window, I sighed to myself as I began to cut my customer's hair.

I couldn't even convince myself that I was happy enough to be back with Hakiem.

We've been with each other on and off for about five years now.

Even though I still had love for him, I just couldn't find myself to be in love with him anymore.

I wanted something new. Something different.

I wanted to be treated like the queen I knew I was.

Dating the dudes here was just a waste of time. They only wanted one thing from you with no strings attached.

I've tried to date outside of my league so much, I was starting to think that maybe finding love wasn't my thing.

I mean.. I know I'm from a different world than most people I date, but what will it take for me to actually find the love I deserve?
