She woke with a scream as she clutched for something, anything, to protect her. There was nothing but darkness and swimming colours in her vision. She grasped at her surroundings until her nails dug into flesh and she felt the steady stream of liquid slither between her fingers. Someone cursed beside her ear and the flesh was pulled away from her reach. She felt a hand cover her mouth to block her screams and a salty taste filled her mouth.
"Easy girl. You're safe now."
The hand moved away and slowly, Selena sat up. Letting her eyes adjust, she found herself in a surprisingly comfortable bed inside a sizeable tent. The light that filtered through was stained red, due to the maroon colour of the cloth. Books were scattered on one side, along with paintings and diagrams. A fairth, of a young boy with brown eyes and brown hair, hung opposite to the bed. He held a rough bow in one hand and seemed to be smiling right at her.
Selena felt something stir within her mind, but no matter how much she looked at the fairth, she could not put a name to that face. Turning her attention away from the boy, she found a man staring attentively at her. Noticing her gaze, he quickly averted his eyes and cleared his throat.
"Rise. Lady Nasuada awaits your arrival."
He stroked his stuble with his thumb and index finger, keeping his eyes fixed on the bed all the while. Dark blood streaked his veined forearm and dripped to the ground. It seeped rapidly through the the parched earth, leaving no trace that blood had been spilled.
"Nasuada..." She rolled the name around her mouth and was left gasping as images of a woman the same shade of the night overwhelmed her.
Lady Nasuada, daughter of Ajihad, leader of the Varden, friend. She thought, as she flicked through the memories. I remember.
She rose to her feet and the man hurriedly did the same.
"Take me to her."
The man bowed and muttered something under his breath before turning and walking out of the tent. Selena followed close behind. The sudden increase in light startled her and she raised a pale hand to block the sun. Noting the lack of burns, she opened her mouth to ask, but was interrupted by the man mumbling, "...had the healers tend to your burns while you were unconscious."
Selena nodded and turned her attention to the world around her. The children playing with wooden toys, the women bustling about to prepare the next meal or chase after the children. Men stood with swords at their hips and occasionally a laugh was heard in the distance. Tents were set in rows and stray dogs were seen weaving their way around them. Some men would stop in their tracks as she passed by, some would even turn and run to neighbouring tents. Selena did not have the slightest idea why.
Am I dressed?
She looked down at herself to check. Barefoot, loose black pants and a black children's top.
Then perhaps I did a terrible deed.
The man leading her stopped abruptly, causing Selena to lose track of her thoughts and almost run into him. She tilted her head back to look at the royal green tent they had stopped before. It cast an intimitading shadow over them and the colour brought back memories of old and she found herself drifting away into a web of memories. Memories that made her hair stand on end.
Hooded figures that flashed from one spot to the next with inhuman speed. Creatures that rode upon winged steeds. Frightful skreeches that echoed through the night and a sense of doom if you were unlucky enough to see what hid beneath those hoods...
She watched the man pull back on one of the flaps and gesture first towards her, and then, the inside of the tent.
Taking a deep breath and running her fingers through her raven-black hair, Selena lifted her chin, and stepped inside.
