"are you excited?" my best friend Lindsey squeals as we pull into the high school parking lot. "first day of senior year!"
"yay," i say uninthusiastically.
"oh, come on. you're not even the least bit excited?"
i stop the car in our usual parking space and turn to face her.
"No. i just want high school to be over so i can go to college and live a rich and happy life."
"Come on, chrissy," she says, giving me a little shove. "these are the golden years. enjoy 'em!"
"noooo," i groan. "high school sucks. i hate going to class."
"all right, i can agree on that note. but you can't argue that there are some good aspects."
i cross my arms.
"name one."
"the hot guys!" she replies without hesitation.
i can't help but smile as i roll my eyes.
"You're crazy."
"no, seriously! the guys at this school are hot."
"like who?"
lindsey thinks for a moment and looks around for a bit before pointing behind me. "Dallas winston, for one!"
i turn to see dallas walking down the parking lot right across from us, laughing and playfully giving a noogie to some short kid with dark hair and a scar across his cheek.
"man, he is smoking," lindsey sighs dreamily.
"him? Dallas Winston is nothing but trouble."
"maybe you need a little danger in your life. you're so uptight all the time."
"am not!"
"you really are."
lindsey puts a finger to my lips before i can say my comeback.
"we could keep arguing...or we could enjoy our first last year of school! come on, girl!"
before i can protest, lindsey grabs my hand and drags me to the entrance. i try to let go, but shes got an iron grip. i knew i shouldve worked out more over the summer.
we stop before the big metal doors. for some reason, theyre looking even more ominous than usual.
"well, this is it," lindsey says, turning to face me. "got your schedule?"
"yeah. i have math first period. you?"
lindsey pretends to wince.
"ouch. i have English."
"well, guess this is where we part ways."
"yeah. good luck, chrissy!"
"good luck, girl!"
we give each other a hug before walking inside and in different directions.
senior math class, room 204, was up the stairs, first room on the left (i made it my job to memorize the senior map over the summer so i wouldnt Embarrass myself by accidentally walking into the wrong class like i had multiple times the year before. the school corridor was really confusing.)
i walk in right as the bell rings and see there are only two seats left; theyre both located at the back right of the room. i sit at the one closest from the right.
"welcome to algebra twelve," a man dressed in a pressed white shirt with a checkered vest and khakis announces. "i will be your teacher for the year, mr. clark. i already recognize some of you from the mathletes club last year. speaking of, sign up sheets are right here," he adds, sitting down on his desk and holding up a clipboard.
"lame," one of the kids cough-says. the whole class laughs.
"there is nothing lame about being smart," mr. clark protests, still on the desk. "i am also the detention operator, and speaking of, you, mr. sheldon, have one after school today." the class stops laughing and the kid who mr. clark has just called out fist bumps the kid next to him.
mr. clark hops off of his desk and starts to pace around the room.
"now, i have been working at this school for fifteen years, so dont think you can get away with just anything with me. you-"
Mr. clark is both interuptted and startled when someone swings the door open so hard it bangs on the wall. i squint my eyes to see the mystery guy who has just barged in. to my surprise, it's none other than-
"dallas winston," mr. clark says crossly. "glad you decided to join us. afraid you're about five minutes too late, though," he says, tapping his watch.
"whatever, man," dallas says, his eyes searching the room.
i can't tell what hes looking for until he starts walking over to the empty seat next to me. of course, the only empty seat in the room and it had to be right next to me. i literally want to bang my head against my desk.
why did dallas have to sit next to me, of all people? why did mr. clark have to have the exact number of seats ratioed to students in his room? what if the school board had messed up and accidentally added another student to his class? mr. clark seriously needed to work on his preparation skills.
"mr. winston, i would appreciate if you didnt take that tone with me, young man."
"I'm sorry, are you still talking? dont you have a class to teach?" dallas retorts, propping his feet on his desk and spinning a pencil with one hand.
"well, im trying, mr. winston, but its kind of hard when you come barging in here tardy and start sassing your elders."
dallas takes out a smoke and lights it, clearly unbothered.
"no smoking in my classroom!" mr. clark shouts, enraged.
dallas ignores him, looking out the window and blowing out a smoke ring. fed up, mr. clark stalks over to him and plucks the weed out of his fingers.
"hey, you can't take that!" dallas protests. "that's my private property! what have you got to say for yourself?"
"Oh, i have plenty i would like to say to you, mr. winston," mr. clark says, "but for now i will leave you with this one word..." He leans in real close to dallas. "detention," he says bitterly, drawing out every syllable, and spitting a little bit on dallas's face.
"now," mr. clark says, standing back upright. "i think I'll be teaching my class now. is that alright with you, mr. winston?"
"yeah, yeah, i dont care what you do."
mr. clark goes on continuing to teach his class, but i can tell no one is paying attention. theyre all focused on dallas, who continues to be obnoxious and disruptive throughout the entire time, though mr. clark tries hard to ignore him. it makes my blood boil. all mr. clark was trying to do was teach a class and earn a living on minimum wage, and here was Dallas acting like a huge dick and making his already complicated job even harder. i hated kids like him. they thought they could do whatever they wanted and get away with it.
and dallas winston always, always did.
