Somewhat puzzled, he stuffed his notebook into his backpack and slung it around his shoulder, took the last of his suitcases and made his way downstairs. When he reached the bottom of the stairs and looked towards the living room, his breath stopped for a moment and the suitcase he was holding in his right hand slipped from his fingers.
There stood not only his family, but also Raphael, Simon, Clary, Maia and Lydia, all engrossed in conversation, until a loud rumble echoed through the house and everyone turned to look at him.
His suitcase was now lying on the floor, with one or two more dents, and Alec was still standing on the stairs while everyone else came up to him and talked wildly.
They had all come to see him off and wish him good luck for his studies in Boston, well not all, because Lydia would be accompanying him.
When his parents had told him that he would not be going to Boston alone, but that Lydia, the daughter of good friends of his parents and also one of his few friends, would be going with him, he had been pissed off at first. He had had enough of his parents trying to interfere in his life and trying to get him a girlfriend.
But when he thought about it further, maybe it wasn't so bad to have Lydia with him, after all, they had known each other since primary school, even if they hadn't had much to do with each other during their time together at high school, they were still good friends and Alec began to think that it wasn't so bad to have someone he already knew with him.
He just had to make it clear to her from the start that they could never become anything more, that he would never enter into a relationship with her.
The thought of sharing his secret with yet another person didn't make him shudder quite as much as it had a few weeks ago.
Since the day Raphael had approached him, the night of their prom, and asked him about his feelings for Magnus.
Alec had always been afraid of how other people would react when they found out he was gay, but the look on Raphael's face made up for all his fears.
As soon as they arrived in Boston, he would talk to Lydia and hope that she would keep his little secret, because even though he knew that most people didn't care whether he loved women or men, he was still a little afraid of coming out to his parents.

The semester had begun and Magnus had made friends immediately, Dot and Ragnor were fellow students and they had hit it off right away.
Unlike Magnus, the two of them lived in the dormitory on campus, but the further the first semester progressed, the more often they met at Magnus' place to do assignments for their studies together or just to hang out.
Apart from the fact that Magnus had quickly made connections, he had also managed to get back in touch with Tessa.
They wrote to each other regularly again and Magnus was so happy that it didn't feel the least bit strange, but as if they had never lost contact with each other.
Meeting up again would be a little more difficult, though, as Tessa had moved to London with Will and Jem and the three of them shared a life together there, something they could never have done in their hometown, and Magnus was glad that his friends could finally be who they were without fear of being chased by a mob.
He would be content to exchange emails with Tessa and talk to each other on the phone now and then.
Of course Tessa wanted to know how Alec and his siblings were doing, because she hadn't heard from him either since her last visit to New York, and Magnus didn't want to answer her questions at first, thinking that she wouldn't notice if he left that part out of his answer.
