Virgil is a rainbow obsidian, a subset of the obsidian gems, which in this universe basically exist to sit around and look pretty for high-status gems to admire the appearance of and be entertained by, and rainbow obsidians are not an exception. Despite the fact their unique coloration is technically a defect due to the fact obsidian aren't meant to look like that, the diamonds along with most high-status gems think the coloration is pretty and thus desirable, so they get to stay. Basically all of the human characters in sanders sides exist as characters in this series, but most of them aren't that important. All human characters use the pronouns they use in canon, as most of them are meant to represent actual people and changing a real person's identity isn't okay. The sides are different, imo, because they are far closer to being characters than real people.
