A normal day

I sat in Spanish class, bored as usual. Today was just a normal day. I felt like something big was coming up though and it made me jittery.

"How do you say "hello" in Spanish?" the teacher asked. I wasn't in the mood for difficult questions.

"Hola," Lila answered. I hated that girl. She was the daughter of the alpha of the rival pack. Coincidentally, she was also the only other werewolf in this class. Which was weird because the school is tiny. Wolves made up a decent portion of the population.

Lila seemed to notice me scowling. She turned around and smirked at me. She was really milking the fact that she was better than me at Spanish. I was the top student in all of my classes, except for this one. I sucked at Spanish. It wasn't fair though because she literally speaks the language fluently. If there was a Chinese class in our tiny hick school then I would have taken that instead!

"Having trouble? Maybe I could tutor you" Lila teased. I wasn't in the mood to ruin my reputation even more by getting into another public screaming match, so I just sat back and glared. She didn't seem to mind.

"I left you a little gift in your backpack," she added and turned back around. What? What could she have put in there? I never left it unattended anymore.

I started digging through my backpack and pulled out a giant dead rat. Seriously? Why would I be scared of a dead rat? I'm literally wolf-kin, I've eaten plenty of rodents while out on the hunt.

"Rose, what are you holding?" Mrs. Johnson asked cautiously. Ohhh. This was a bad look.

"AHHHHHH IT'S A RAT!!!!" that attention seeking bitch named Brittany screamed aloud. Brittany was my desk partner and she always annoyed me. She was the type of girl who would randomly start screaming when you turn the lights off. Brittany ran to the other side of the class which prompted a giant group of students to do the same. They were all yelling and screaming dramatically. I tossed the rat at Lila who got up and feigned terror. What a bitch.

"ROSE! Go to the office NOW!" The teacher yelled at me. I saw Lila giggling and flipped her off. Big mistake. I was promptly kicked out. Maybe that was why I was so bad at Spanish class. Being in the same class as Lila really disrupted one's learning.

I contemplated walking to the office or just ditching school entirely. But I decided to be a good girl like always and walked to the office.

"Rose? Why are you here again?" Mr. Tremble, the principal, asked me. It was a rhetorical question. He already knew. "Why were you bullying that girl, Lila?"

"Bullying? Sir, I wasn't bullying her. If anything she was bullying me!" I defended myself.

Normally, it would be easy to get them on my side. After all, I was the student council president, straight A student, and captain of the softball team. I only wore mascara and lipgloss and I never broke the dress code. I had a very good reputation. Unlike Lila who hung around the rebel kids who'd wear unusual outfits, make shops run out of eyeliner, fail their classes, and graffiti benches after school hours. And it was easy before. Every time we had fought before, Lila would get the blame and I would get zero. But she was getting smarter and setting me up now.

"I swear, she planted the rat in my backpack!" I explained.

"And why did you throw it at her?"

"Because she planted it in my backpack, I just said that!" What a fucking dumbass. I hated all adults who weren't wolf blood. If it wouldn't make matters worse, I'd turn to wolf and fuck him up.

"Okay, Rose. I believe you. After all, she does have a history of harassing you. But that doesn't let you off the hook for retaliation. You shouldn't have thrown it at her. Next time something like this happens, I want you to take a deep breath and tell the teacher. Don't fight with her anymore. Blah blah blah blah" I started tuning out his lecture by the end. Well, I was definitely getting suspended, but at least I took Lila down with me. They would probably suspend her too. You might think I was worried about my position as team captain and student council president, but I wasn't. Nobody else wanted to do those jobs.

When I went outside the office, I saw Lila waiting outside. I smiled at her. That's what you get. Her light brown eyes glared back at me. It bugged me that she was really pretty. The truth was that she was always on my mind, rent free. In the same way I hated her, I also envied her. She was beautiful, confident, and extremely intelligent. Even though she never did well in school, you could tell she would if only she put in the effort. I wasn't like that. I wasn't naturally good at anything like she was. Instead, I had to put in effort to lose weight, study, and think about every little thing I did. I was exhausted and she seemed... carefree.

"Looks like it's another suspension for you," Lila laughed.

"Hah! But I'm not the only one!"

Lila laughed again. "Hah! For a goody goody like you a suspension actually means something. For me it means I get some free vacation days. Looks like it's a 3 for 3 win for me!"

I put my hands against the wall, essentially trapping her in between my arms.

"Well with this time I'm going to come up with a plan! Something so evil and extreme you will regret ever trying to mess with me!" What this plan was exactly I didn't know, so I intentionally kept it vague.

Lila shoved me away. I grabbed her backpack and threw it out the window.

Then she kicked the back of my knees and I fell hard on the wood flooring as she laughed and laughed. I flipped her off from the ground.

The truth is that we weren't immediate enemies. The first time I met her was in kindergarten. We didn't find out that we belonged to rival packs until 1st grade. And we weren't old enough to understand what that meant until 3rd. Before then, we were friends. Not close friends, but she was always nice to me. I remember thinking of her often, even then. It is weird how people can just subconsciously stick out to you, but you don't realize it until they actually become significant. I must have known deep down the bitter hatred that would come between us in the future.

We became enemies one fateful day in third grade. We were all playing on the playground. Lila was standing at the very top. I smiled and waved to her, hoping she would join our game of monkey bars. Then, without warning, she threw an egg at my head. It broke just above my eyes. She yelled out, "Sorry!" and went down the slide. Then she took off running. To this day I can still feel the betrayal. It didn't hurt, but it was the shock. The feeling of the yolk running down my forehead as I started sobbing and the other kids called over the yard duty. I was called egg girl after that for weeks!

That day, I told my parents what happened. They explained that Lila was a member of the evil pack, Dark Moon. That was why she threw an egg at me! And that I needed to stick up for myself because she would never stop harassing me otherwise. They gave me an egg from the kitchen and told me what I had to do.

The next day at school, I threw an egg at her head.
