CHAPTER ONE
Rose stood up from the floor, she had been in a rehab centre for five months now. She was tired, she hated this place with all her heart. She hated the doctors, the nurses, the cook, the cleaner, everyone.
She was a little relieved that her constant itches had reduced, but she needed to leave this place. She wasn't a drug addict, or maybe she was, but it wasn't the drugs that were making her go mad, it was something more.
Mum and dad didn't just understand. Something was happening to her and it wasn't just the drugs she was taking. It wasn't just the addiction to those drugs.
That was what she had told the doctor, but his reply was, " Rose that's what every patient who comes in here says. You are addicted to drugs, and when you don't take these drugs your system starts to react. That's where we come in. We help you break that addiction. We are here to help you Rose".
That doctor, there was a way he looks at her and it makes her super uncomfortable, and it was so annoying. It felt like he was looking directly into her soul, searching for something. Something more, she just felt weird around him.
The pain she felt whenever she remembered that her mother was going to take her baby away, was tormenting her. Her heart was heavy, she wished she would die after birth, or lose her memory because thinking and knowing that her girl was away from her, was enough to make her mad.
She looked at her stomach. She was already due, any time soon she would have Kambili. That was the name she had given the baby. She knew it was a girl, a special girl.
That night Rose went into Labour, and Kambili was born. She looked into her eyes, and she saw something magical, something glorious. She saw the world in her eyes, and that was it. That was the last thing she saw before she drifted off to sleep.
She stood up from the floor, after sitting and watching at the wall for hours as various thoughts flooded her mind. She had been discharged, and she has been thinking.
She had stopped school because of the drugs, she wished she didn't do them. Thinking about how it all started, and watching it play like a movie, She thought, "How did I even get into this mess?" She remembered that night, the second semester of her second year. Shola had invited her and her roommate Chioma to her birthday party.
She had agreed to go because Shola has been friends with her for a very long time. So she went. Shola had made a bet of #8000 if she could take on the draw of cigarettes. She did do it, she never got the money because the drug knocked her off her feet.
She was wondering why the cigarette was so strong until they told her that it was cocaine. That was how her journey of drugs began. She constantly took these drugs because she liked the way they made her feel the first time. She was slowly becoming addicted to these drugs, and she never knew.
Her parents started becoming suspicious, of the way she was acting when she came back from school. She was always angry and violent. She itched sometimes. They took her for a test and found out that she was taking drugs. Immediately, they stopped her from school. She was in her final year then. They sent her to a rehabilitation centre.
There they found out that she was pregnant. She couldn't remember who the father of her baby was. She sat down again and looked at her stomach, which had gone flat as if a living entity had never been there.
It's been 8months since she had Kambili, she remembered how she felt when she held her, the way her heart leapt for joy. She wished her mum allowed her to hold Kambili longer. She turned to the wall and allowed herself to drift away for a moment.
